Talks on contract opened with Cuellar
« on: February 23, 2012, 10:27:42 AM »
I've just been having a look on Skysports and Mcleish has said there are talks ongoing with Carlos over a new contract. I'm surprised but would be pretty happy if it does come to something.

Good player and will cost us to replace him, so I'm OK with this.

If he gets a long stint starting at CB now and -more importantly- looks the part, it would save us having to fork out for a new CB   (well two new ones, I still think we could do with a shake up there regardless).

Thing is, three managers in a row have been unsure about him in his favoured position, so there must be something in that.

But only going on the evidence of my own eyes, he's looked decent there.  Apart from that period when he had Curtis Davies alongside him.

Why would he? he's spent most of his career on the bench?

I thought we wanted to reduce the wage bill?

Not at the expense Of the better players. If that was the case we could save money by
Offloading bent and given as well

It's funny that if he wasn't injured during the summer,he may have been sold, after playing him AM has seen how good Carlos is. Shame he didn't do the same with Jean the second.

We'll need to pay what he is on, or close to it, to replace him, plus a transfer fee.  So this will effectively save money, if he signs.

Exactly John.

Of course the downside is if he impresses over the next few months, he puts himself in the shop window and becomes even more attractive as a free agent.

Must say my flabber is truly gasted. Thought they wanted rid at any cost, so i'm guessing the manager has realised he's worth keeping more than the other two. Like Carlos i must say, never causes trouble, got forced into playing right-back when he arrived and never recovered his confidence and since then he's always been the one who gets dropped seemingly. Hopefully this is the start of the club choosing to keep/sell players based on their ability rather than how long they have left on their contract

A surprising but promising move.

My mate (one of the original five 'supporters representatives') had another meeting with AM the other week, and reckons he told him that Cuellar is our best defender and wanted to keep him but Lerner wanted him off the wage bill because of his contract running out. So if true, maybe it's a good sign re:wages. Then again, it's probably a good idea even if we end up selling him, as at least we'll get a fee.
