Even if he wasn't, isn't that the purpose of a squad? The ability to change things if you think someone else like Bannan, Albrighton etc can offer something else.
Has taking him off improved things?

Well if what Richard has reported is true, he should have been taken off as no manager can let a player get away with that in public.
