Archibald Leitch - Villa Crest
« on: January 14, 2012, 03:20:36 AM »
Could someone please tell me if Archibald Leitch designed Rangers mainstand at Ibrox before our Trinity Road stand?
Also who had the lion crest on their shirts first between the two clubs?

Cheers

Leitch designed the Rangers stand in 1928 and it was built in '29.

Trinity was opened on Jan 26, 1924. I also read somewhere that it was designed by Leitch some years ealier but building was delayed because of cost. Anyway, we wos first!

According to Simon Inglis, Leitch actually took the Rangers board to see the Trinity and they asked for something similar for Ibrox but without the elaborate "money no object" touches that Rinder requested.

Penny pinchers.

Apparently Rangers did not wear a crest on their shirts until 1968 (!) and then it was the intertwined letters.

I have found the pic of their old crest- same as ours, on our shirts in the fiftes/sixties and on the old Trinity mosaic- also mosaic on the Ibrox Leitch stand but haven't a clue how to attach it here. Wiki Ibrox History.

There is a lot of common stuff here and I would love to know where the old connection is.

Oh, of course Rinder got fired because of the overspend on the stand.

I also read somewhere that their club motto, 'Ready' was a far later addition than our 'Prepared' one.
