It's Derrick Williams, a centre back cum left back.

How the fuck is it that yet again, with 20 mins to go, I'm actually starting to get hopeful about the game, impressed with the lineup. In spite of all evidence and repeat disappointment?

Utterly unexplainable!

He doesn't know his best team
Yep, why Ireland and not Bannan?
Ireland might have shown a better attitude in training? McLeish might think that he fits better with Clark and Petrov? He might feel that Ireland would match up better than Bannan against Arsenal's midfield and defence? He might feel that Ireland behind Gabby would work better than Bannan behind Gabby?

Any number of reasons.

Why wait till tonight to try it against a very in form Arsenal?

Who is "Williams" on the bench?

Because Bannan is a player who gets his head up and looks for a pass. He also moves around into positions to get the ball and when he recieves the ball, looks to see who is moving for him to pass to. As nobody in the Villa side is capable of moving to recieve a pass (whether through skill or lack of confidence), then maybe it's not worth playing him. Bannan has resorted to trying too many spectacular passes. We've turning what could've been a good player, into a player destined to play football elsewhere.
