Are we the one and only Villa?
« on: October 31, 2011, 12:00:53 AM »
In the Football League alone there are:

15 Uniteds - Carlisle, Colchester, Hartlepool, Hereford, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle, Oxford, Peterbrough, Rotherham, Scunthorpe, Sheffield, Southend, Torquay and West Ham

12 Citys - Birmingham, Bradford, Bristol, Cardiff, Coventry, Exeter, Hull, Leicester, Manchester, Norwich, Stoke and Swansea

10 Towns - Aldershot, Cheltenham, Crawley, Huddersfield, Ipswich, Macclesfield, Northampton, Shrewsbury, Swindon and Yeovil

4 Rovers - Blackburn, Bristol, Doncaster and Tranmere

3 Albions - Brighton & Hove, Burton and West Bromwich

3 Athletics - Charlton, Oldham and Wigan

3 Wanderers - Bolton, Wolverhampton and Wycombe

2 Countys - Derby and Notts

But there is only one Villa  ;)

However does anyone know if we are the only Villa in the country?

Are there are Villas in non-league football?

Also where does the name "Villa" come from and what does it actually mean?

There's Pelsall, Askern and the one who lost in the cup on Saturday. The origin of the name Aston Villa is explained in the current H&V.

I think there is a team in the NE called Ashton Villa too - a nice tribute in my eyes.

I can only think of a few clubs with unique names: Port Vale, Sheffield Wednesday, Tottenham Hotspur, Nottingham Forest, Crewe Alexandra, MK Dons . Anyone think of anymore? Probably a few in Scotland

there was a TV programme called Crapstone Villa once. Always wondered if it was a dig at the name of our club! Bastards.

There's a couple of local clubs down the south that were started up by a villa and villa on the end.

Hanworth Villa just got knocked out of the FA Cup. If they'd beaten AFC Totton in the 4th Qualifying Round, they'd have been in the 1st round of the FA Cup.

Pelsall Villa are probably the best known other Villa otherwise.
