The Full Ron Saunders
« on: October 30, 2011, 07:35:29 PM »
From Interview with Ron Saunders:

I always thought it would be perfect to have in the Villa Park tunnel, as Liverpool have 'This is Anfield', a sign that reads 'The Full Ron Saunders'.

'The Full Ron Saunders'. That's a great idea. Could we get a campaign going or have it mentioned somewhere? Would be in keeping with all the banners that were introduced. We need to make VP a fortress.

Your thoughts?

As I said I think it's an idea. It's something that would speak to our players, and their opponents, about our proud history. it would shout 'We have been winners, we have been the very best in Europe, go out there, give the cause 110% and hockey this lot into oblivion'.

Also, unlike the 'bells are ringing' campaign, there is little scope for this to be messed up from the other end. All we want is the quote in the tunnel. It would be more effective than the current, rather bland,  'this is Aston Villa'.

I'm afraid most players would say "Who?"

Totally agree.

Just put a picture of him up - staring - would motivate me!

That's kind of the point, Ross. If there's one thing Villa fans expect from the team is that each player gives 110%. We can be very forgiving if a player lacks technical finesse but not giving everything you've got for 90 minutes is unforgiveable. Once players realise that and by touching the sign are making 'a promise' to go out there and give their all, it's a timely reminder that they're playing for a great, historical club where the greatest of heights have been reached by giving 110% effort.

Can we name a stand after Ron? Witton End or Witton Lane either would do.

Not sure I'd go for it if I was the current manager.
And if I was a current player it wouldn't make any difference to how I played.

I was wondering if it might be possible to get him in for a chat with the squad... strictly informal, obviously.

No one should under estimate what he did for our club, he should be given the recognition he deserves while he is still alive.
