Houllier sacrificed winning games for his ideas.
McLeish never seemed particularly interested in winning games.

Lambert is a winner. He really wants to win.

John, if your idea of a bad choice of manager is one with a long term plan I struggle to think what a good choice would be.

As for Lambert, I hope he adopts a more advanced, passing game. This idea that, you know, passing it about is one option but you can always boof it to the big man is anachronistic.

Having a 'more advanced passing game' is dependant on having the players capable of doing that, which we currently don't. That doesn't mean that over time Lambert won't aspire to that, but from the off he'll get more out of our lot than GH or TSM ever did! That's IMHO of course!

James Nursey has tweeted Hear #AVFC MAY announce Lambert as their new boss tomorrow. Think club would ideally like to. Followed by press conference mid of next week.

Yes its only the mirror but it would make my Long weekend

I thought Swansea's budget-Barca approach disproved this idea that to do something as basic as play out from the back you need expensive, multi-million-pound transferred superstars.

To use a Randy-ism, I am fairly relaxed about Lambert being appointed.

His job spec is to bring some belief and pride back.   If he does that he wont go far wrong and a club of our size can win something again.

Norwich totally outclassed us at carrow road and played some nice stuff when they came to villa park, in fact had they not missed some sitters they could have been 2 or 3 up in the opening 20 mins down here, they certainly dont play ugly football, they are more of a mixture and can pass and move or use a more direct approach depending on the situation.

I think we will be pretty well entertained next season .

I don't think anyone other than ourselves and maybe Wolves really sat behind the ball against them though. We'll see how he reacts to that happening at VP. MON's reaction was certainly ugly football.

It's not about how much players cost though, or how much you pay them, it's about having the right players for that system (which I don't believe we do) and that's what Swansea proved. To do that, time will need to be afforded to anyone! I just don't subscribe to this theory that Lambert is a one trick pony. Of course i could be wrong, I just think the board have/will have delivered what they said they would on the day that TSM was sacked, but Rome wasn't built in a day and all that.

Not picking a fight by the way Monty, no gripe with you or anyone else on here, we're all Villa and that's what matters!

That's a good point Monty and one that all managers coming from smaller clubs to bigger clubs have to get past.  A bit like the second half of a debut season to a promising youngster.

a pass or die manager would be a good choice for me, as that is the sort of football i would like to see us play, but its not everybody's choice, and we have to be aware of that

when you see posts that read ' i dont care what football we play as long as we win' you can see that Lambert might well be a better choice for the majority of fans,
its more what we are used to and i feel Lambert will be able to get his style up and running far more quickly than either of the other 2 choices

yes i'd have loved Martinez to come and try and change our whole philosophy on how we play the game, because i would have bought into the whole plan,
but i dont think the majority would, see the posts saying they dont want the ball passed along the back and getting no where.

i think you will be dissapointed if you expecting any big changes of style with Lambert, its this style thats got him where he is now, he's not going to change, its been successfull for him, so he willl keep to it, anyhow i still feel he is better tactically than MON.

i enjoyed the football MON's team played in the first 18 months, but then you see him signing Harewood and Heskey and you know its all going to go one way, same for Lambert, if he signs Holt and Wilbraham who are playing well for him expect the same type of signings for Villa,

that is the manager we have appointed, that is the manager he is,
we shouldnt be bringing in a new manager then hoping he changes,

i dont want to be negative, but Lambert isnt the man who plays the way i would choose, but i do think i am in the minority, look at the polls, you cant argue with that

thats what you want, thats what you'l get, i just hope it can be successful and we will all be happy

Martinez snubbed Villa for a second time?

So get Lambert and give the man a chance.

You make good points John, and I'll be massively disappointed if his first signing is Holt and will eat up huge amounts of humble pie, I just don't buy this 'one trick pony' idea with Lambert. He went to Barca and studied them for heaven's sake! MON probably thinks Barca is in Mexico! Let's give him a fair chance if appointed, he's not been that bad the last three years has he?

I read a few posts from norwich fans claiming holt wanted to leave because he had fallen out with lambert, no idea if its true but i wouldnt say holt will definately follow, pilkington looks a decent player who i wouldnt mind seeing here though.
