Der Hammer honoured
« on: October 09, 2011, 11:47:54 AM »
Thomas Hitzlsperger has been given a prestigious award in Germany for his stand against racism. The award, the Julius Hirsch Prize, is named after a Jewish footballer who played for Germany but was later banned for being Jewish and was killed at Auschwitz. Thomas is the first footballer to receive the award. It will be presented before Germany's game against Belgium on Tuesday.

Frequent interviews deploring racism in football and also very prominent in a public campaign to combat right-wing extremism

Well done Tommy, would like to think his time in our cosmopolitan city rubbed off on him in more ways than just the accent.

One German newspaper said he matured as a footballer and a person in England

Brilliant news, congratulations to him.

I really wish we'd brought him in the Summer, cracking player and seems like a genuinely nice guy.

Top man, hopefully he can continue the good work by firing screamers at the heads of racists in the crowd

Very well done!  And to be the first recipient as well implies that somebody in the German FA  recognised his contributions as work that they value and would like to continue - and encourage to spread.
