Oldham away 6-0

One of those days that you never forget. Was anyone else on here at that match?

1 It rained.

2 Weird goings on before the game. I think the Oldham Boot Girls were the final victors.

3 Enjoyable match, especially the first half (4-0?). Jimmy Cumbes's first match, Bruce Rioch back from suspension, Micky Wright recalled after injury, Jimmy Brown brought back. All made a big difference.

4 At 6-0 we tried to get up the other end to see the rest of the goals. Never made it, no more goals but did succeed in getting drenched.

Any lingering doubts some of us had about promotion at the end of the season - one major one was called Tommy Hughes - disappeared after this match. Happy days!

I went to this with my older brother, who by this time had his first car. I would have been 14, he was 19. His dark green mini 850 served us well for any 3rd division away games that our Mom and Dad didnt go to. I think he wanted to get back to go out in the evening, so we had to run out the ground the  moment the full time whistle blew and were back in Birmingham not that long after 6pm.

Talking about weird goings on before the game. There was a concrete ramp in the corner where 3 wheeler disabled cars could drive down and watch from the touchline. It was probably a good hour before kick off with just a few hundred in the ground when we could suddenly hear a car horn blarring out. We looked over and there was a Robin Reliant on its side,  resting on the terrace next to the ramp, the driver still sitting inside. We watched as 4/5 people simply went over lifted it up and put it back on the ramp and the driver drove down to his place and parked as though nothing had happened.

A long time ago but I seem to remember a really protracted train journey, what seemed like Holte -enders taking over the town, trouble getting a pint, the really shit weather, but all of it being worth it - another day out with a rampant attacking Villa!

Still at school doing a paper round and couldn't afford this game and Southend away in the FA cup the previous Saturday, so it goes without saying I opted for the Southend game, which we lost 1-0!.

I didn't go but I remember the home fixture thinking "If we can put six past them away from home then it will be at least six plus at home".  Of course it didn't pan out like that and we were treated to a typical frustrating 90 minutes with very few chances for either side.  With half the crowd gone home early up popped Ray Graydon in injury time, from the half way line by the dug out unleashing a ferocious shot which nestled in the back of the net.  A goal I will never forget.  I will also never forget that Oldham from the kick off should have equalised with their one and only chance.

It could have been more, we stopped scoring after about an hour I think.
Oldham had just opened their new stand I remember, and it was raining stairods, but we didn't care.
Went with my Dad and Brother...great days.

Of course Andy Lochhead would go on to become coach / asst mgr at Oldham. He returned with them to a tumultuous reception at Villa Park.

I was there,one of my all time favorite away games. As others have mentioned,it was real Manchester weather raining most of the day.Got soaked but did'nt care after seeing us hit six.Does anyone else remember all the aggro on the way back to the station after the game? There were loads of louts waiting for us,someone said they were Man Utd fans looking for revenge after getting a good hiding at Villa Park the previous season at VP in the league cup.Don't know if it was true but i do know i had to leg it. I remember on the way home on the train everyone singing " i told them Oldham "

I remember the 3-wheeler incident too- though I've not brought it to mind for 40-odd years- funny how the mind works- why can't I remember anything useful??
I also vaguely remember getting wacked on the head with a brolly wielded by a member of 1 Manc tribe or other- but not caring as we won 6-0
