Happy days. I can't believe it's over 30 years since I was at that civic reception.

Marvelous!

When all you see nowadays is the choreographed bouncing in front of the sponsors' logos whilst the ticker-tape is fired skywards, the whole thing is so refreshingly amateur.

I bet Ron never imagined that day where he'd be less than 12 months later...

I remember getting back to Lichfield on the Saturday night, getting slaughtered and climbing up Dr Johnsons statue in the Market Square and putting a Villa scarf round his neck. I got up Sunday morning, warmed up and ate the congealed chinky i'd left on the bedside table the night before, and then drove over to Brum, probably still half pissed, with the other lads for the civic reception. Absolutely fantastic memories and I'm just sorry i don't think my two sons'll ever know such good times following the Villa.

I got there really early, about 9am and it was cold and wet. Such a wonderful atmosphere. I loved every minute of it.

I remember an interview on Star Soccer the night before just a few hours after we had won the title that went along the lines of -

Gary Newbon "Now you have won the league are you going to smile a bit more Ron"?

Reply "Football's a job Gary, it's not all about smiling"
