Villa scrap book 1949
« on: August 01, 2011, 01:08:40 PM »
I have been given an old scrap book of press cuttings etc which belonged to a long gone Uncle.
Sorry the quality is not good, but it does show football or rather being a football supporter has not changed so much.

This dated August 20th 1949.

WHERE ARE THE BARSONS, HARDY`S ?
Sir-a few days ago, a letter was written to "The Birmingham Mail" about the alarming position of Birmingham City. As two Aston Villa supporters we think that the position of the Villa is far more serious.
A request was made about two months ago for the formation of a Villa supporters Club.
An official of the club said that in his opinion a supporters club was not needed as there was an efficient Shareholders` Association!
Further, the clubs manager resigned for an unstated reason. Anyone with any sense knows why he did so.
A few days ago the team lost 3-0 to Middlebrough - a disgraceful display. This is due to the policy of playing promising young players in the second and third teams and leaving older players in the first team.
Where are the Frank Barsons, Sam Hardys and Billy Walkers of the 1950s ? - Your, etc.,  TWO VILLANS.

Loads more like this if people want to see.

IT`S A GOAL - IT ISNT - PLAYERS WERE BAFFLED>
Aston Villa`s inside-right Gibson, flung his arms into the air and jumped with jubilation. The Highbury crowd yelled "Goal!". But it was not so. From an acute-angled lob by Ford (not in picture) the ball hit inside of each post, but never crossed the line. Ted Platt, Arsenal goalkeeper (on the ground), was bamboozled: Lionel Smith, full back, depressed: and Villa left -winger Dixon inside the netting, flabbergasted.

The match report on the incident was as follows : -
Quote
There was an extraordinary incident in Arsenal`s goal when from a Leslie Smith centre Platt could only push the ball up under the bar. It fell and seemed to roll the length of the goal-line, and possibly over it, before it was scrambled clear. Villa appealed for the point but in vain.
It seemed queer justice that Arsenal scored immediately afterwards. In the 35th minute Lishman headed in from a free-kick by L. Compton for a foul by Powell in midfield.

THREE PAIRS OF BROTHERS.
Is this a record ? Aston Villa now have three pairs of brothers on their books. Here they are (left to right) : Frank Moss, Eddie Lowe, Reg Lowe, Jack Harrison, Jim Harrison, and Amos Moss.

MAGIC FEET IN ACTION  No. 25
PASS WITH A PUSH. And Ivor Powell shows you how.

Judgement of the time and place to part with the ball can be learned only by experience, but here are a few helpful ideas from Ivor Powell, Aston Villa and Wales. He says: "Keep your passes on the ground as much as possible"
"The man to whom you are passing will probably be running into the open space, so dont aim straight at him as this will make him pull up. Put the ball a couple of yards in front of him so that he doesn`t need to break his stride.
" A long pass is always better than a short one. When you are in a jam and have to make a short pass you can give it accuracy by pushing the ball rather than kicking it"
Ivor is clever at not disclosing what he will do next. It`s useless to "telegraph" a pass. An opponent is sure to intercept it.
Don`t run with the ball and then pass in the direction you are facing.
Try to sense where your team- mates are so you don`t have to look round for them.
In this picture note the tremendous concentration with which Powell plays. He demonstrates the "push" which he favours for accuracy - and for keeping the ball "on the carpet" - when making a short pass.
And here are Powell`s  footprint and signature to add to your collection.

ASTON VILLA v STOKE.
Fifty seconds before Dixon, Villa inside - left, scored this goal, Ormston the Stoke outside - left had hit the upright. A clearance by Villa goalkeeper Jones finished with Villa centre - forward Ford veering out to the left and laying on a pass which gave Dixon a "gift goal"

He was still coaching at Bath (uni team I think) until recently.

Not much changed apart from money and players wanting to leave Villa for glamour club or champions league football.
