Wimbledon 3-2 Villa 1986 all the goals
« on: July 27, 2011, 09:04:29 PM »

With the exception of some very very brief snippets on the old Story of Aston Villa vhs, I had never really seen any footage from the relegation season up until i just found this clip so i viewed it with both fascination and a lump in the throat knowing this was probably the worst season in living memory for most Villa fans. Anyway, a game of some significance for Wimbledon, their first ever home match in the top division.

Here in China Youtube is banned because of footage like this – it was a horror show. I was there and it was a really bad sign of the season ahead, coming a few days after the 3-0 home defeat to Spurs. I had thought our hard men like Allan Evans and Garry Thomson would have had enough to show the self appointed “crazy gang” what real men were all about, but I was very wrong.

A Chelsea mate of mine came along with me (a proper fan who was going in the days of Graham Wilkins and Teddy Maybank,  with crowds below 10,000) and all he talked about afterwards was 2 Villa fans near us who spent the whole game jumping up and down and singing like Argentina fans. That is about all I can remember too.  A horrible season with no positives.

I made the mistake of going to this.

Coach driver couldn't find the ground, which was no surprise considering the size of the place.

By the time he did, we were one down and down to 10 men !

The writing was on the wall after 2 matches. Depressing times.

I was on the same coach! (official travel?)

Dark, dark days indeed.

That season was my absolute low point following Villa; shit kit, shit team, shit crowds - incredibly only just over 4 years after Rotterdam.

The following season was great though  :)

Yeah, that's the one Charlie. Went with the official travel from the Leisure Centre.

Put me off going to that ground ever again. The next time I went to Wimbledon away they were at Selhurst Park when Dalian scored his wonder goal.

Your right, the following season was great, the away days in 87/88 were the best I can remember.

I think we all smelt disaster after this game. I wasn't there, the only time I saw us play away to Wimbledon and it wasn't at Selhurst was a 0-0 under Dr Jo. The relegation slide started that night in London and ended in London at Selhurst against Charlton (I was at that one) in my opinion. Although another 0-0 in the return game against Wimbledon was another kick in the balls for us.
