Yeah O.K it was deadly serious then.

You've caught Sonlyme's disease.  Just because something isn't one thing doesn't mean it has to be the extreme opposite.  VD's right.  There was nothing lighthearted about it.  Why not just post the Youtube videos of N'Zogbia without all the tediously smug better-fan-than-you bollocks?

It was pompous and argumentative. Nothing wrong with that but I'm not surprised it provoked a reaction such as the mild rebuke from Paulcomben.

Well, maybe I haven't being paying attention to sonlyme's posts. I thought it was lighthearted.
Oh well, its not now anyway. At least we had one good page.

Have to say I hope that McLeish quote about 9th being difficult is taken out of context. I'd expect top 8 at the minimum with the resources he has at his disposal.

Even though stronger resources only managed ninth last season? The squad is capable of more but there are lots of issues for the manager to sort out so it will be to his credit if he does it.

For what it's worth, I think a top ten finish would be a pretty good start for McLeish, aiming to improve again the following year. A couple of good cup runs (by which I mean, winning them both ;-)) would help, too.

I agree, I think a comfortable top half finish would be decent from McLeish.   If he can achieve that without resorting to sterile, safety first football, so much the better.

I'd snap your hand off if you offered me 7th or 8th with a cup win. This squad has come close before to winning one of the two major domestic trophies, so we have some experience of getting to and handling the latter stages. I also think it will really benefit us, in AM first season not having the stupid Europa League to concern us. I'll put money on it putting a big dent in Spurs' attempts to qualify for the CL this season.

Top 10 and a good cup run needs to be the target.

True. One of them being the squad's back-up resources in the event that some of the undoubtedly-talented first-choice picks get injured.

I must say that watching live ( South Africa) the game today, I didn't see a team lacking in guts or confidence. Unlike what we viewed last season.

I saw players in their right position and busting a gut. I saw youngsters failing at times but because of that being blasted by the old pro's. Good, it is  time for the Bannans of the World to earn their corn.

So- in the spirit of this thread I am confident and  will certainly give the Bald Ginger one his chance.

Actually, I am impressed so far.

Just watched that Youtube footage. The great thing about the Ireland goals is that he looks as though for all of them, he just looks like he's pissing about. The guy has got major, major talent and if we can see that in a Villa shirt, it really will be 'Ashley who?'

Just watched the tape of us out muscling Blackburn in HK.

A solid organised defence - a quick inventive attack - and another win - can't wait to see them tackle Chelski.  Barry B was a delight.

Pre-season then - played 2 - won 2 and Dazza can't stop scoring.

But wait - I hear a high pitched whining - is the PC on the blink?  Is a pigeon trapped in a tumble dryer?  No - it can only be the virtual Villa posse -  'It's only pre-season' - 'It means nothing' - ' We're doomed I tell you' (Add your own tale of woe here) etc etc.

It means nothing?  Tell that to the rednose scousers who got all excited about the £100 million Kenny boy has spunked only to watch his new purchases (Stewie included) get thumped 3 -0 by the mighty Hull (minus naughty Jimmy Bullard).  Happy days indeed.

Add a pinch of N'zog and...

Roll on Villa.

Imagine spending the best part of £100 million and losing 0-3 to a capsizing Hull FC - it if happened round this way bed sheets would be

The creator of this post takes no responsibility for it being seen as smug - better than yow - or in any way lighthearted.

To be fair, if we f*ck up on August 13th it will mean nothing.

I notice that you stopped short of slapping Dave Woodhall's wrists.

"Villa boss Alex McLeish has tempered fans expectations by telling them not to expect more signings and warning it will be "difficult" to beat last season's ninth-place finish."

So, what do we do if the manager is the most miserable of the gits?
