Except the manager.

I can only think he was a panic buy as no rational person would be searching for a guy to score the goals to fire us into the CL and end up at Heskey's door. Mebbe MON knew as much about centre forwards as he did about centre halfs.I thought maybe it'd maybe, *maybe* make sense if we needed back up for Carew, in terms of a "similar" (ie physically powerful) player. Those sort of wages to a player that old on that long a contract, though. Christ.

Quite. Bent would have guaranteed us Champions League at that stage. What a shame.
That's pretty much my view too. Shame the board let it carry on as long as it did though.
He was 10 times better under Houllier than O'Neill, but kept getting injured last season.

Shame the board let it carry on as long as it did though.Yes, but the entire world was telling them O'Neill was a genius. Much of the media are STILL telling all and sundry that O'Neill is a genius. It's easy to see why.Since then, I think they've learned a lot about putting all your eggs in one basket as they did with him. The pity is that they don't really seem to have learned a great deal about the day to day management of a football club, which is why we seem to lurch around so amateurishly so frequently.

Didn't Paul Faulkner take over responsibility for conducting transfer deals when he was appointed CEO?
