Has played for Stuttgart, Lazio and er, West Ham since he left us. So a mixed bag there. Did very well at Stuttgart, didn't really get a chance at Lazio and most of the 'ammers fans were raving about him soon after his return from injury.

Watched him in their game v Liverpool at home and he was as good as anything on the pitch. Wasn't all to clever against us, though I must admit. You could make the argument that his career has peaked and I wouldn't necessarily disagree. But at 29 he should still have a bit left in the tank.

The fact that he can play a few positions (and that he goes to Villa games in his own free time) swings it for me.  No point adding numbers just for the sake of it, I agree. But we do need depth and I'd be more comfortable with him filling in at left back than Ciaran Clark for example. A left footer in the centre also gives us a bit of balance, and he's probably mature enough to play deeper now. When he was last with us didn't he often start on the left with Barry and McCann in the centre?

Ye gods, he was ok the 1st time round, nothing special.  The best thing about having him @ VP was shouting "SHOOT" when he was just outside OUR 18 yard box.  We'd do much better letting Gardner and Delph get some more game time.

I'd like him back, a decent player who loves the club, can't see any negatives really, although halting the progress of Delph, Bannan and Gardner would probably be one, i'd still have him as a squad player though.

One thing about Der Hammer is atleast we'd know that we had a committed player signing for the Club, see Ireland and Dunne.

He's the type of signing I expect us to be making tbh, a decent player but not top 6 material. That next level up is currently out of our reach so we need to get a hard working squad togther that can grind things out with flashes of quality in there.  We need to be solid and organised at the back, combative in Midfield and with pacey strikers up top (Bent being our trump card). This is what Aston Villa 2011-12 will be imho.

He's an experienced head as well, done alot in his career. We've got Makoun and Stan in there, another one wouldn't be bad. Especially with his versatility.

He's a good plan B too. Solid enough player who can be a match winner.

an average player when at the Villa (as another poster said, bar the very odd 30 yarder, there was fuck all else to him)

I think he would be a decent addition, but is another who would be better in a 4-3-3 than 4-4-2 - only possibility in a 4-4-2 I could see would be him and Parker or Reo Coker together, if either came too.

I'd definately like him back.  People are saying that having him back will hamper the development process of the like of Bannan and Gardner?  Not sure how and why?  I can't see Gardner playing much this season.  he is only 18 right?  so if we offer Hitz a 2/3 year deal, Gardner will be 20/21 then and maybe in a better position to start playing more games for villa?  Just a thought thats all.

You say that as if the opinion of a moderator should be considered any differently from non-moderators - it shouldn't. We know about as much as anyone else does, and no more.

Gardner is potentially a very special player. He needs to start playing soon. Gerrard started playing when he was that age and I would put Gardner in that class. He wont be coming in and starting straight away but he needs a clear run at the first team soon and the more ordinary players we keep out of his way, the better.

I can understand poeople wanting another player in, I do too and Parker or a player like Fofana or Moussa Sissoko would be great. Quality players. But that would be at the expense of Petrov for instance.
