Then again, I can remember Gary Williams once venturing down the left...

I go as far back as Charlie Aitken but the best all round left back we've had in my time is Steve Staunton.

Charlie Aitken for me. He was tough as old boots.
I would like to give an honourable mention for Alan Wright Wright Wright.

Aitken > Staunton > Wright

They were better than Stock Aitken Waterman.

Gibson for me - for a short period he was the best left back in the UK.

1/Charlie Aitken by a country mile as far as I'm concerned.
2/Alan Wright was very underated, at a time when Villa were going great guns how he never got a England call up mystifies me even today, as they kept playing someone out of position. I feel it was a case of "He's not big enough"
3/Colin Gibson, winger turned left back. He would have flourished in todays game.
4/Steve Staunton, loses it for me on the loyalty card I'm afraid, still a great fullback though. Picky, I know.

It has to be Aitken.
He was a good defender, very quick recovery, all left foot, and good in the air...highlighted by scoring plenty of goals towards the end of his career particularly in the Third Division, oh, and he got to play against and with Pele !
Staunton was an excellent footballer, has to be second place, and I'd go with everybody else with little Alan Wright for third.
