Best left back for me was Colin Gibson, just in front of Steve Staunton. The likes of Charlie Aitken,Tony Dorigo and Gary Williams were also pretty good

Left back's a difficult one. At right back, John Gidman would go straight into my all-time team of players I've actually seen. Left back.... not sure. We haven't had a truly outstanding player there in my time. I think I'd probably go for Charlie Aitken for his consistency, longevity and reasonable skill.

once saw Charlie Aitken head a ball off the goal line but then collided with the goalpost and knock himself out ..

Charlie Aitken....but I liked Alan Wright and Steve Staunton in that role too, but agree with previous post(s) that it's a position that, during my years of supporting the Villa (just under 40 years) there is no real outstanding candidates like there is for all other positions.

I can only go back as for as 20 years, so Steve Staunton. Alan Wright not too far off. He wasn't spectacular but he was 7/10 every week. Staunton had real quality in his left peg though, and he can twat the ball like few could.

It was strange how when we won the league in '81 and famously only used 14 players, that 3 of those were left-backs.
