It  looks to me as if it was a done deal and the interview (or second interview?) was a formality. We appear to have tapped him up. Years of doing things 'the right way' and we change our ways for McLeish! I agree the press conference is crucial to him for starters.

Not sure if this has been posted, but I found it very funny. Cheers Smithy.

Awesome...loved this bit "Fan Ian Everall said, “If it’s a choice between a man who relegated our arch-rivals twice in four years, or a man hell-bent on destroying Western civilisation, then I’m really not sure who I’d prefer as the next Aston Villa manager.”

“Who could attract the better players?”

Young and Downing off? McCleish manager?  No doubt our new kit will be horrendous and not availble until January. The way things are going right now I fully expect the fixture list to see our first 4 games to be Man Yoo, Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal.

On the bright side maybe this as a win win situation. Do very badly, he'll be off and we can say "told you so". If he does very well, then all is well with our beloved club and we'll be happy to praise Randy on a brave decision. However, I fear it will be mediocre middle of the road..not good enough but not bad enough to see him go...

Oh well, maybe he'll surprise us in the transer window.

I'm not too interested in what McLeish says: no doubt he'll say all the right things, great challenge, big club, etc. Standard stuff you'd expect from any new manager.

I want to hear what the board - be it Randy, Paul Faulkner, whoever - have to say. Genuinely fascinated in how they have collectively come to the conclusion that McLeish is the best man for Villa.

There is no way in a million years that they are going to allow Downing to leave now. They’ve already created a shit storm of epic proportions by employing McLeish in the first place, if they were then to follow this by selling our most valuable current asset they would seriously need their head examining.
I expect as soon as the Ginger One is installed a press statement clearly stating that no more players will be sold (excluding the dross which we’ve already targeted for the door). Anything less than this and I honestly will believe our board has been stolen and replaced by a bunch of raving shit chucking lunatics.

@PaulmcGrath5 has just tweeted his 'shock' at the villa's approach for McLeish given the quality managers available.

Smithy, what's happened to the site? Those adds are a bit of a pain.

Funny stuff though

To go OT for a second, sorry - Lee, I don't have much day-to-day involvement in the site nowadays, so have to pay someone to manage it, that means expense, which means I have to take on more ads to ensure I'm not losing money.  I agree they're unsightly, but if they weren't there I'd probably have to pull the plug on it.

Actions speak louder than words, the appointment tells you everything you need to know.
The General and all that lot will come out with the usual guff
'Ambition hasn't changed, still want Champions League place and trophies' etc, etc.

Meanwhile, Downing will be doing his best to escape and Darren Bent's feet will be getting itchier.

A month ago, you'd have said there is no way they would fight to get Alex McLeish in as Manager.

PHEW!!!!!!  Just refreshed the Villa news page (as I have been every 25 seconds today) and a new article came up with a guy holding a Villa scarf!  Thought it was the 'official end of days' announcement.... thankfully it was Tom Hanks!
