McCleish was at the Priory hospital this morning having his health checks; he said its pretty much done and dusted pending he passed (which he did). All the hopes of Flores are simply that, hopes and dreams.

Peter Pannu has no evidence of tapping up and in my opinion he will possibly get minimum compensation add to the fact no doubt Villa will raid them for Foster.

The amount of compensation due drops to under £3m from 1/7/11 so I expect his appointment to start from then and a compromise to be reached but kept private.

my reading of the situation is that Randy has decided that we can't compete financially with the top 6 and so he has decided to go with the steady option, someone who will be happy working within financial constraints of making us a more or less self-financing club, someone who's aim will be to keep us top half with the outside chance of a cup or Europa League qualification.

It has been reported this morning that we have turned down the chance of appointing Sanchez Flores eventho he is keen to come and we have discounted Mark Hughes. It would appear to me that they are managers who have the ambition to chase the honey pot of the champions league and would expect the financial backing to have a realistic chance. By appointing McLeish, Randy has got himself a manager who is liable to stick around for a while and won't rock the boat.

I can kind of understand it but it is very disappointing. When you hear that Ash may be getting 130k per week at Man Ure, there is no way that we can compete with that. I presume that if Downing goes to Liverpool he will be on 100k per week or thereabouts, crazy!!! And the transfer fees appear to be spiralling even more.

The only way that clubs can fund that is by guaranteeing champions league footy every season which for a club like ours is a huge gamble to chase.

I don't want McLeish as it signals the end of the dream but I can understand the reasons.

Whether Randy is looking to build something long term, which seemed to be the way Houllier was heading, or if he is looking to get us in a better financial situation prior to selling is anybodies guess but I think he has probably realised that there is no point throwing money at trying to compete for a top 4 place.

Let's just put things into perspective here.  Randy has been AMAZING for our club.  His financial backing, transfer budgets and ability to support a manager has really brought us on!  He has improved the ground, facilities in the area (such as the old tatty Holte Pub), look at the Holte suite now too!  Also the Training ground (which some mindless twat de-faced).

I for one was furious over the link with McLeish, but it looks like its going to happen so lets live with it!!!  I am a fan of Aston Villa Football Club, and have had a season ticket for over 25 years, which give or take a few years when I was a dribbling toddler - is the best part of my life!!!  I refuse to boo my team, the board or the manager they appoint.  (I do sometimes boo the ref that is appointed on match days).  Managers come and go.... chairmen come and go.... our club has been there since 1875 and will continue to live on way beyond this managerial appointment, Randy Lerner (who I believe will leave a positive legacy) and all of us!!!  Lets just support our club and not dwell and put all our efforts into ridiculing decisions made!

There will be sections of the ground NO DOUBT that will boo and continue to do so.  Having a season ticket for so long I have learned that these usually are the fans that boo and moan when Villa make more that 2 or 3 passes across the defence, or if nothing is on and a player passes back to the keeper.... they boo.  We keep possession but are not in the box within 10 seconds... they boo!  I don't class these as fans - I also never see them at away games!  They are the first to talk about how great Barcelona are when they do it... but the Villa do it then its more 'get it in the box'.  Idiots!

Quick comparison............ How had Harry Rednapp proved himself really before he went to Spurs?  But everybody loves Harry!  A relegation, premiership experience down the bottom of the Premiership with Pompey and Southampton.  Relegated Southampton after 27 years of top flight football.  Done well with W'Ham and Pompey, but all in the Championship!  'Fluked a cup'....... any of this sound familiar?  Now look at him, moves to a 'bigger' club, with a chairman who backs him and a transfer budget which allows him to spend on quality!  Could he do this before?  No....if anything, his days at Pompey are the same at AM's were at Birmingham!

We can do ALOT worse!

Anyway - that's enough of my thoughts!  No doubt they will be frowned upon - but what the hell.

This is how I'm reading it too. In a nutshell, the appointment of McLeish sends the message that we're no longer aiming for the top, that we're happy to be also rans. But, if you're not competing to win, then why bother taking part in the first place. It's sickeningly disappointing.

McLeish will build nothing long-term. Everything about him is short-term - short-term defensive tactics, short-term buying of journeymen pros who won't contradict him, not really giving youth players a chance (how many games did Jordan Mutch play last season?). He's the kind of manager who is the precise opposite of everything we should be looking at. No fresh new ideas, just stale old ones, with yawn-inducement thrown into the bargain.

The board are just being moronic about this. Not only do they give so much of a shit about Premier League experience (a real red-herring) that they don't even care if that experience amounts to being relegated, they then ride roughshod over the feelings of the fans like this. There are many bog-standard, 'steady' (another word for having no career momentum), boof-bally managers who won't rock the boat. Why appoint this one? Someone needs to tug at Randy's face to see if it isn't a mask.
