All I know is that, if they appoint him, they'd better be planning some serious financial backing to protect him.
In which case why not give a more credible manager the funds?

I'd actually have complete admiration for him if he took the job. He must have some Buster Gonad-sized stones.
But that doesnt change the fact he'd get very small leeway before he got dog's abuse.

The point is, he's just not a very good manager.  As you say, if he's to stand a chance he'll need to spend an awful lot of money.  Why not give that to someone like Benitez who got to Champions League finals.

We've seemingly gone from looking at proven winners like Benitez, through risky newcomers like Martinez who maybe at least have the right footballing philosophy, down to a proven loser whose teams play shit football.  How on earth is he the best person for the job, other than being out of work(ish)?

We are run by a set of people who haven't got the first clue.  Seriously.  And Pelty if you're reading this site (and I know you were last night), is this what you meant by the board knowing what they're doing?

He'll turn it down, and I'll get the call, I just know it.

What's the difference between "Sir Alex" and tens of thousands of Villa fans?

One gives a flying fuck about Villa.

At least if McLeish is appointed we can all wear those Tartan berets with ginger hair attached to games. That will be very exciting for everybody.

he's a genius - he'll sign a £15m 5 year deal, get sacked one year into it because of fan-abuse and he'll pocket the rest.

The message from the board is clear. It is a slapdown. "Get back in your box. We're in charge and we appoint the manager, not you. And to prove it..."
That's how i'm starting to see it, a flexing of the muscles.

It's a pretty daft way to flex the muscles.

I'm also convinced they're going to focus on the fact that he used to manage Blues as the reason people don't want him, as that provides a convenient smoke screen for the real main reason, which is that he's got a proven record of relegation and dire football, to which they have no answer.
Nonetheless, the Board's reasons for wanting to sign him are clear: downsizing.

We feel it is essential to select a manager who understands and supports our strategy for the Club to grow and to be sustainable. Otherwise, the natural tensions and competitive pressures that are involved with every season will ultimately cause instability and make continuity impossible.

Well, we've all moaned about the media painting us as a selling club / short of money for the last year, and we might think it is unfair and incorrect, but you can hardly blame them for thinking it.

Why on earth send out messages like that?

The one thought I'm grimly holding on to for dear life is that during my working life I went for job interviews and at the end of the process was told "Thanks but no thanks."
Please Randy tell AM the same.
Pat Murphy (the fount of all knowledge) says interview is taking place "somewhere in London".

Conversely, have much have we weighed out in the last few weeks in compensation?  O'Neill, Houllier and now Blues if McLeish comes.  Lerner should just have a bonfire on the north stand car park and tip barrowloads of £50 notes onto it.

Personally I am appalled at this appointment for two reasons. Firstly the style football that McLeish favours and his poor record in England, however my real sickness about it is what it says about Randy Lerner and his plans for Aston Villa.

Mazrim hit on it earlier in that I truly believe that Randy wants out and I predict we will see a fire sale of all f the best players at the club. Young, Bent, Downing, Gabby, Delph, Albrighton & Clarke will all be sold over the next 12 months allowing Lerner to trouser the best part of £100m to recoup money he has spent since he came here. He will then put the club up for sale. I think it is case of damage limitation for him now and with the appointment of MCLeish he has a manager who will work under those conditions. I honestly think Lerner has given up.

Why else would he be showing such ignorance and contempt for the fanbase?

I am rapidly coming to the same conclusion!

Eh? I said no such thing.

So what will McLeish's preferred formation be when we play Blackburn at home, 6-4-0 or 4-6-0?

A 3 year contract on £40k pw can make your blobs swell up like barrage balloons.
If it goes tits up early doors, we'll have to pay him off and he'll be laughing.

9-0-1 after he's signed Cameron Jerome.

I'm pretty sure that the only place on earth you can buy those is Blackpool for some reason. For those who have been following the betting on the next Villa manager, a few favourites have come and gone but Hughes has consistantly stayed in the top two or three.
