One thing I can't fathom is how the board can possibly think this will bring 'continuity'. Even before a ball is kicked in anger, the atmos at VP - which is often fragile anyway - will be far worse than at the lowest ebb of the DOL period. The stadium will basically have the same sort of feeling as when the manager has just got a dreaded vote of confidence and is two games from the sack. We know from experience what will happen: the players can't help but be affected by it, the defence will be a bag of nerves and if, god forbid, we have Foster between the sticks, he'll be flapping like a budgie on crystal meth. Cue another relegation fight, and this one will be a much closer thing.

Verdict? Gingerscotti won't make it past New Year. How's that for continuity.

yep. its going to be a car-crash unless Mcliesh turns into Guardiola. Whatever you think of his football or whether you think he can do the job he won't get an ounce of leeway from the fans which means he can't really make any mistakes.. I only hope that when it goes tits up Lerner doesn't dig his heels in, otherwise he could find himself on the end of some unpleasant chants as well.

Personally I am appalled at this appointment for two reasons. Firstly the style football that McLeish favours and his poor record in England, however my real sickness about it is what it says about Randy Lerner and his plans for Aston Villa.

Mazrim hit on it earlier in that I truly believe that Randy wants out and I predict we will see a fire sale of all f the best players at the club. Young, Bent, Downing, Gabby, Delph, Albrighton & Clarke will all be sold over the next 12 months allowing Lerner to trouser the best part of £100m to recoup money he has spent since he came here. He will then put the club up for sale. I think it is case of damage limitation for him now and with the appointment of MCLeish he has a manager who will work under those conditions. I honestly think Lerner has given up.

Why else would he be showing such ignorance and contempt for the fanbase?
This is the only explanation I can think of for this ludicrous appointment

I'll bet they gone and asked Ferguson for advice - naively, as if another manager is going to give you impartial advice - and he has bigged up his former captain. The board have then gone all swoony and swallowed it, hook, line and sinker.

I wouldn't be surprised if you are right, Paulie.

Reminds me of when we asked Wenger's advice on whether to sign Pires.

Ferguson is a good friend of McLeish, obviously he'll say he's a good choice.
As above, our board take it at face value.

Several ex-villa players commented that the atmosphere in the dressing room under AM was one of the best they have every experienced (and they left during MON's tenure)

Aye. I wonder how many of the Houllier out lot could live with him now. As they say, be careful what you wish for....

EXACTLY! All those morons who said GH OUT are probably hiding right now.  Their wish got granted but look what has turned up instead!

I thought he should have gone at the end of the season based mainly on medical grounds - as in we couldn't risk a relapse during next season.  Football wise I wasn't his biggest fan, but I though our form post Bent warranted him getting another crack at it, even though I was still far from convinced.  So on balance I think it's right he left.

But what does one have to do with the other?  Saying there is a problem and it needs to be fixed is not the same as saying 'and alny old shit will do'.  We needed a managerial change, but the board have picked the wrong man, IMO, but that does not take away from the initial need for that change.

I agree, it was right for GH to stand down due to health reasons but his vision and philosophy was good and I think he would have been a success if it hadn't been for the health issue.  The board have picked the wrong man as there will be too much pressure on him from day 1 and the moment we hit a sticky patch, im pretty sure a majority of fans will call for the board to take action and then the villa merry go round will start again along with the media circus with accompanys it.

We have only one report that McClaren was rejected because of the fans response, i now think it was because McLeish made himself available and they left the path open for him. disgraceful, and for someone representing the club to start patronising the supporters is unbelievable. Randy you are the owner show some leadership and stop this farce.

Come save us Andrew Lloyd Webber

I closed my eyes
My head was hurting
To see for certain
What we thought we knew
On all the boards
Posters were weeping
As our club was sleeping
Any shit will do

I saw Randy arrive
It was a golden lining
Bright colours shining
Wonderful and new
But from west to east
The news was breaking
And supporters were shaking
Any shit will do

A crash of drums, a flash of light
McLeish will come, his records shite
Our hope faded into darkness
We were left confused

Can we return
To the beginning
Randy's light is dimming
And our dream's are too
The supporters
We are still waiting
Still hesitating
Now Any shit will do

maybe randy is seeing the other side of villa fans -what happened to the we trust in randy brigade? He has the right to appoint who he wishes and we have the right to not approve but i wish people would at least give him a chance before saying i told you so, we may be surprised at the players he brings in , he will sort the defence and has the likes of downing, bent and albrighton to create and score goals , bring in 4 or 5 decent players and he may do well.
