I can see the point that you are both making there, but surely the only people that matter in this ARE the people who are connected with the club? The press can do and say whatever they like, and so can other teams supporters as far as I am concerned, but the people who Villa have approached, I would argue, are rather pleased with the way we go about things. In fact, I think it could be considered a strong selling point, if anything.

I'm certain Randy will surprise the media & a few on here when we finally appoint a new manager. How many were predicting GH or Bent?

The thing with Martinez as part of the process we requested to speak to him last week. Whelan has used this to spin this as "Martinez picks Wigan ahead of triple wages at VP". I think the statement from VP regarding Martinez is having a dig at Whelan for leaking the story to the press.

"The Club would like to thank Wigan Athletic Football Club and its chairman, Dave Whelan, for their professionalism in dealing with our request to speak to Roberto Martinez."

He wasn't interviewed, wasn't offered the job but Wigan / Martinez have used the situation to get some positive press & make us look third rate. The whole process is a smokescreen because the job's already gone to Hughes.

Perception unchallenged becomes reality. Martinez will ALWAYS of turned us down now. Bad form by our board. PR disaster.

I agree history will remember it that way, but what did the board do wrong?  Wigan leaked it and that's something we cannot control.

Yep, that's my view, it's now history true or not. I just hate to see us ridiculed but thats because I love the club.

WE should of come and and made it clear that he was one of a number of candidate we wanted to sound out. However in no uncertain terms was he offered a job. We just rolled over and got shafted by Dave Whelan

It has to Moyes, Hughes or SM in my opinion. All this talk of foreign managers who have never managed in the PL is madness. We need somebody who can hit the ground running and start filling in the gaps in the squad. By losing GH we have no players lined up. As such getting a competitive squad in place for August is a priority. How could a Klinsman or Rijkaard come in and have a clue where to start? Our options are limited and I certainly don't want the ginger jock from SHA.

Not sure I agree with that.

We presumably still have our scouting network in place they can advise the new manager, plus if it's say Rijkaard he can just go get us a keeper from Holland that he knows, for example.

MoN had run the scouting network into the ground and GH had his contacts. If we have 'fallen' out with GH over his leaving we have no network...

I really think it's Hughes.  It's too convenient for it not to be I reckon.

The longer it goes on I think Hughes. Due to the end of June situation.

What could have our board done?Wigan have used to to their advantage as they didn't keep quiet. The Villa board wanted to speak to a promising young manager as one of their options-and that's it. It's a bit embarrassing Martinez wasn't tempted but he had his reasons.

If Villa want to go for Hughes now it's all above board, so maybe that's it's all been about?

I honestly think anyone who thinks Moyes will come is dreaming-Villa and Everton are just too similar (I'd love to be surprised Bent-style but can't see it).

Hughes or Maclaren would do a decent job in my view, and Maclaren has a better record at club level.

Agree with all of that apart from the last bit about Hughes.

While this business is embarrassing right now none of us will give a damn if we make the right appointment. Mid way through the season when we're up in the top ecehlons of the table and Wigan are in another relegation scrap things will look very different and we'll look at these days as a whimsical "remember when... "

I think a lot of us are falling into a WUM-TROLL Trap.

In this case the WUMS are the media and the Trolls are bitter SHA, Spurs fans and the like. We would all like to get this done as quickly as possible but the fact that its taking a week or so (when we are talking about THE most important job at the club for the next 5 years) isnt the end of the world.

I would expect an announcement early next week and we can all go back to sleep.

He didn't use it well enough I grant you, but from where do you get 'run it into the ground'?  And GH was rebuilding it, so did everyone he employed walk when he went?

Besides, any decent manager who comes in will have their own contacts, so as long as they are here early enough to get all the necessary transfers done I think we shouldn't have a problem.

Villa don't have to come out with anything, they've told us all we need to know, they're going to look for a manager and get the best man for the job.

They don't have to tell us how many they're going to interview, who's not going to be interview, why when where.
