Do you have a similar summary of his spells at Sparta and gala?

I live in Spain and I was fortunate enough to go to an "El Clasico" at the Camp Nou during his reign.  I don't think I have ever seen Barcelona as tactically out-manoeuvred as they were that night.  Barca lost 1-0 to a quite brilliant Baptista goal and it could easily have been 4 or 5.  He only got the job in the first place due to the obvious Dutch connection with the club and the 'total football' ethos that is clearly evident in their play today was implemented way before Rijkaard arrived yet somehow he didn't quite grasp it. Guardiola came in and turned them into world beaters, Rijkaard may have won the Champions League but his football was very much derided in Catalunya and they were glad to get rid of him.

No thanks to Frank Rijkaard.

You entitked to an opinion, although it wouldnt be shared by many..Including those that worked close to the man..The statement from Messi which ive listed above says it all.

Its not just Barca where he has proved his knowledge of the game either...And again like ive listed above, look back at his Netherlands side in Euro 2000.. Its was the BEST team in the tournament by far.. And like his Barca sides, Just beautiful to watch.. ::)

And you are also entitled to your opinion.  However, I thought Madrid were on a totally different level to Barca in the game I went to (Dec23 2007 I think).  Guardiola has improved that club massively IMO and you'd struggle to find a Barca fan that would take FR over him.  I got to see Barca play many times under Rijkaard and have been a good few times under Pep and I think that the current Barca side play the best football I have ever, ever seen.

Sorry Matt - that is a daft comment.

I don't need to say anything, the post above says it all.

The above v a manager of a poor Wigan side

hmmmmmmmmm - let me think

If by the above post you meant mine I have to tell you that I wasn't comparing the two managers.  I wouldn't take either.  I was merely putting forward my view on Frank Rijkaard.  If that's ok.

Unless your name is Matt - why would you think I am on about you ?

Because you said "the post above says it all" and my post was immediately above yours.  If you had told "Matt" that HIS post "says it all", then I wouldn't have thought it was directed at me.

Frank Rijkaard at Barca was "constantly" bringing through the youth, during his whole tenure. Guardiola is using the base of his style and side from what Rijkaard planted. You have to remember Barca had won nothing in 7 years before Rijkaard arrived...None of the kids had come in and played for the 1st team. Messi, Xavi, Iniesta etc etc all blooded in by Rijkaard!

Imagine this man with Delph, Albrighton, Bannan and Clark. I believe bringing and using the youth players is high up on the board's list of criteria for the next appoinment? I also believe they prefer a manager thats not currently involved with another club?? ::)

The thing is though, I'm pretty sure that the ethos of bringing through the youth was there well before Rijkaard and I don't think he made the most of what he had there.  I know that sounds odd when he won the CL but I just think that Pep has taken them to another level.

(Doesn't it feel weird discussing the Champions League when we may have lost out on the Wigan boss?)

What a strange day, hardly anyone wanted Martinez yet people are upset that he didn't want to talk to us.  I'm glad its not going to be him and fair play to him for being loyal to his club, football needs more of that.  What suprises me about Randy even considering him is that with Ged he went for an older manager with lots of contacts and now one of the options on his list is a young manager that very few people outside of the UK will have heard of. I have a few mates who are Wigan fans and a number of them would have been glad to see Marinez go as they feel he is all style over substance.  I for one find it funny that the press are linking anyone and everyone to us as they clealry have no clue what Randy and the board are thinking.
