As many have pointed out, we must have had an original target to let Houllier go ...I believe that target was Hughes. Unfortunately, either him or his agent got greedy and decided to hedge their bets and resign and see if Chelsea or Spurs came sniffing. They didn't and Randy got offended and put an end to his interest.

Moyes and Ancelotti don't want to come and Villa fans don't want McClaren. It's a terrible situation! Do we really want Martinez? Has he proved himself more than Owen Coyle?
It's a long season and good managers are always available at certain points. We shouldn't panic but having said that, maybe we have already, namely by firing Houllier.

I never rated him but he could have carried on for a while. If he had made a decent start to next season, then no problem and if it hadn't, we could have made an appointment at Xmas. It'll be interesting to see who is available around Xmas. If Moyes and Everton have their usual bad start....

That's the thing, replacing Houllier at great cost, even toappoint Mark Hughes - that doesn't make much sense.

Doing it to appoint Martinez makes even less.

If - if - Ancelotti and Benitez knocked us back, then is there not another manager in the whole of Europe we could give the job to who'd do a better job than Martinez? Someone more qualified?

There is not one shred of evidence to suggest that Martinez could remedy our weakness from last season - The defence.

I've have laughed many times during the last few pages...quality comments.

I personally think RL has gone to hire my cousin Chris, he lives in Madrid, he doesn't have any managerial experience but he's good with money.

It was reported Hughes was on 900k at Fulham last season and even though he was offered a new, improved contract, I'd imagine his agent was looking to triple that amount at Villa. Add to that the close links between our board and Fulham's, the way Hughes played Fulham right up to 48 hours before resigning would not have gone down well with Lerner, especially after the way MON left us.

Strange interview just now with Whelan on SSN. He spent most of it talking as if Martinez has more or less gone to Villa and then at the end, when asked for his gut feeling, said he felt he would stay for another year or two. He was extremely complimentary about the way the Villa have conducted themselves over any possible deal, really went overboard about it, which is always nice to hear

Its a bloody shame he didnt then !!!

Villa have not said an absolute dicky bird since GH was released. We have written to chairmen (and I presume it IS prural) for permission, and then he comes out on national telly blabbing his mouth.

I would have thought the Villa are livid about it all, and it wouldn't suprise me if Whelan has used this for his own benefit and tactic. I still think Martinez is down the list, one of those "we would like to inteview to hear his thoughts but we have other people in front of him".

If we don't offer him the job, Whelan will be on telly again saying how loyal and fantastic Martinez is.

If the headlines was true that Hughes conduct with Fulham ruled himself out of the running, I would hope Whelans has done the same.

ooh !! common sense at last. Good post

This whole thread would get a lot of people a BA in Creative Writing. It's interesting, though, to see how people analyse the disinformation that has been created by the media, because we all put our hopes and fears into it.

Ancelotti failed to deliver? He finished second in the league this season and won it the year previously.

You wouldn't want him as Villa manager?

if that was at me, I didn't say that Maz. I said he is unproven at our level, just like Martinez is. It would be a step up for RM and a step down for CA but they would both be working at a level different to where they are currently. Both could go either way. I would have loved CA to have said yes purely for the prestige it would have given us, he didn't and I see RM as a bold move by the club that I hope pays the dividends I believe it will.

Except that it would be hardly Martinez' fault, if Whelan decided to spill the beans.

I'm impressed with our way of doing things. Hughes did himself no favours (assuming he wanted the job) by leaving in an almost O'Neill-esque fashion.

I wouldn't mind Martinez, I think he's able, ambitious and aimiable.
