Never wanted FSW but much prefer him to Martinez, in fact i would prefer Houllier to stay on if they are the contenders.

Thats it really. Fine if he wanted GH out but at least replace him with someone with a comparable track record. As has been said, what area of Martinez's CV has made him the front runner? The only thing i can see is the ability to survive on a pittance which doesn't bode well.

Ah well, not my choice, but easier to get behind than some mentioned.

Whatever Whelan says, I doubt he'd end his holiday if he wasn't interested.

Should be an interesting summer.

Very interesting.  Reckon this will see Downing join Young towards the exit, we've still got all the troublemakers on the books and god knows who he'll bring in - hopefully not Wigan's first team. Going to be a very very bumpy ride

No, I dont think so. Without checking, I'm sure the hints were somebody with a CV that was impressive (certainly enough to disregard the likes of Hughes), that it might cause a positive meltdown a la Bent and so on and that he didn't want to mention a name because he didn't want to get anybody's hopes up.
That's not Martinez, clearly.

Downing will go nowhere until next Summer.

Things might have changed since MM last posted though last night.

He talked about 'plan B' this morning, it might well be Martinez is plan B. His odds were decent at the weekend when Ancelotti was the favourite.

Some people need to look past the Wigan thing. He's been driving a Fiat Punto in F1, we might not be a Red Bull or McLaren but let's see how he gets on in the Ferrari of Aston Villa.

I agree with Karl. It's not he's done at Wigan, it's what he CAN do at Villa.

How we gonna stop him? If a top4 club come in, and he doesn't want to play under Martinez, it not like the Barry situation where the club were in a position to hold on to him

Also, i may be barking up the wrong tree, but is it my imagination that the quality of this football club gone downhill since Paul Faulkner showed up? We've lost one manager, who despite his many faults got us into the top 6 on a regular basis. Employed an ageing french manager which did'nt work out and now thinking of taking on a unproven manager who's team last season only stayed up thanks to a last minute goal from N'Zogbia.

I'm starting to wonder whether they know what they're doing, to be honest.

Perhaps they want a manager who is just grateful for being given the job so will do as he's told.

I'm still pinning my hopes on Martinez just being one of the people they are talking to but we appear to be running out of other options.

Turn down the bids.

I'd like to hear the reasons why he is now first choice. Out of potentially dozens of available or gettable managers across Europe we come up with a shortlist of Moyes and Ancelotti, fail to attract them and then go for Martinez? Why? Because he's young, seems like a nice bloke and has a vision of playing attractive football?

This just seems like a recipe for disaster. I understand the hope that he might do well but I'd rather expect us to do better as a result of an excellent managerial appointment than be just crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

Some people need to look past the Wigan thing. He's been driving a Fiat Punto in F1, we might not be a Red Bull or McLaren but let's see how he gets on in the Ferrari of Aston Villa.

What happens when someone who has been driving a Fiat Punto all their life gets into a Ferrari? They crash.

Seriously, though, I understand your sentiments, but there surely has to be some indication he's a gamble worth taking. This is a club which is supposed to be competing for the Champions League.

Where is that indication he is worth gambling the house on? He kept Wigan up - just - but didn't match what Steve Bruce did there.

It smacks of Graham Turner to me, and it'll end in tears.
