So what has Martinez done to make people want him as manager of this club?
I cant believe what I'm reading.

I know right? It's like I've fallen into a different dimension where Martinez had Wigan punching well above their weight, rather than clinging on to the foot of the Prem for the last couple of years.

I can't imagine any shortlist that would have both rafa and Martinez on it frankly. What was the criteria? they're both foreign?

Lerner has a history of appointing the wrong bloke for the job of head coach at the Browns, and that's supposed to be a sport he understands.  If he appoints Martinez, he's just continuing the tradition with two on the bounce here.

Going by some people's logic in here we should appoint McLaren because he has a better CV than Martinez.

Don't be silly.  McClaren can't be appointed because he used an umbrella once.

I'd rather McLaren than Martinez.

I can at least see why they might think he'd be a good appointment.

What are the reasons for appointing Martinez? Likes good football? There's one, although I like good football, too, although I can't say I'd know how to get a team playing it.

what else?

Maybe he's the best of the ones who've said yes. Which is even scarier.

What happend to all this talk of "this having to be a statement of intent " appointing the right manager to take us back to the big time ?
I for one am quite shocked at the Martinez link as I believe the guy is to inexperianced for the job in hand at Villa , in fact I would prefur Houllier a thousand times more that him !

How can you see Downing wanting to remain ?

I'm not as horrified at the thought of Martinez as I rightly should be and I've no idea why.

I think i'd rather Martinez than Maclaren.  For a start it wouldn't make us into a laughing stock, whereas we'd be slaughtered with schteve.  I do admit though he wouldn't have been on my list, and worry that he's been appointed on the basis of being an eloquent and stylish man, rather than an outstanding manager.  Maybe we're looking too hard for someone to step into an identical style of play to that of Houllier.

Go on then, we're still waiting to hear your arguments for why it'd be a good appointment ("we're not Man United" doesn't count, sadly).

I can think of a few reasons McLaren would be a better choice, but I can't see many in support of Martinez.

I can see even fewer reasons to shift Houllier for either of them,

Out of the two, Coyle please.  He might bring Gary Cahill back with him.
