But why are people so sure Benitez would want this for any longer than Ancelotti? If Benitez did well with us, and in a year or two Real Madrid have had enough of Mourinho and came calling, wouldn't Benitez be all over that? A chance to return to his homeland Spain with one of its greatest sides.

I think it is well known that Benitez likes the Premiership and likes living in the UK. So that would seem to improve the odds of him staying. But wouldn't we like him to do well enough for Madrid to come knocking on the door?

I don't get people worrying about a new manager being poached away in a year or two, surely that would nean we were doing well? give me two years of success with ancelotti over 5 years of bugger all with Moyes or Jol etc

I think transfer budget would be the determining factor for Ancelloti, wheras I think Benitez would be more flexible to get the Job.
I worry about how poor Benitez acted in the transfer market at Liverpool.

Benitez has made it pretty clear the wants the job. That statement the other week sounded like he was describing us. I've also heard it said by journos that he's not really making a secret of the fact he wants the job.

Yeah, he might go off to manage Real Madrid, or whoever, but that's the case with pretty much any manager we hire.

I don't have a problem with the possibility that he could go on to manage Real Madrid. Presumably if he did, it would mean he'd done a good job for us. These days loyalty's for fans, not players or managers.

Here we are arguing over whether Ancelotti would be better than Benitez. Ain't life strange?

but if we're talking about being commited to the "project" so to speak, that's a minimum 3 years in my book, I'm not sure either man meets the criteria. Both are CL winners, and both will want to be back in that environment sooner than later. If it isn't happening for any reason with us, would we really be surprised with either jumps ship to any of Europe's elite clubs before they complete the job they would have started with us?

That's why I think we need to be careful when discussing committment, because in my opinion, unless it is going really well with us, neither will stick around long enough. If we want somebody long term, given where we are today as a club, mid table, not in Europe let alone the CL, then you're looking at a David Moyes type hire, or even an up and coming option.

Now maybe being as both are very good at what they do they will get us to where their ambitions lie within 3 years, then they will likely stick around.

Ancelotti's all well and good but I wouldn't rule Curbs out tbh, he might not be the most exotic name but he knows the area, gets goals out of Bent and is a Club man who's in it for the long haul.

:)

It's set up nicely for McClaren to waltz in and surprise us all.

Ancelotti + Laursen would be absolute dreamland. I'd sleep outside the Holte Suite from now till the 1st day of the season to see that happen.

off course, but I want a manager who wants to make us into one Europe's elite again, and stay the course. Rather than possibly starting something and then bolting. With either, every season they don't achieve CL which is all that matters nowadays seemingly, they'll be getting itchy feet. Also, every summer, they will be linked to the biggest vacancies around especially those in their native land.

Believe me, I don't want to come over as not wanting Benitez or Ancelotti, but I think we should all be a little cautious in discussing committment of managers who have been at the very top of the tree coming to a club that hasn't seen those days in a long time. I want to be massively wrong off course, and believe that they will aspire to make us again into the best in Europe. I suppose I'm just skeptical.

On the one hand, it is brilliant.

On the other hand, it is going to be so disappointing when they unveil McLaren.

You just know it is going to be really deflating when McClaren gets it after all.

How could you prefer somebody who has dnoe ok in this league rather than somebody who was won it?
The players will see that. They wont care how many years hes done and neither do I.

It's more than a PR stunt. If Randy is looking to pay a top manager and seriously back him, I'd want to make sure we're not being used until something better comes along. Hopefully that's not the case but it's something that should be considered.

Please stop stinking up this up this debate with that bell end. McLaren is not going to get the job. The only reason we havent already appointed Benitez, who's shaking like a shitting dog to land this job, is because we're trying to land something better.

God I hope so anyway.
