Anyone got any concrete speculation? Or are we just moaning?

Concrete speculation, isn't that an oxymoron!?

Yes.

Midlanders moaning on message board?  Never.

Dennis Mortimer saying he wants a British manager to get the job.  And then compounds the error by saying Holloway might be worth a shot.

Oxymoron! Who are you calling an Oxymoron?
Is that better than an ordinary moron?
Euphamism for Bluenose?
Moaning's what we do well. Villa fans are experts - we've had more upheaval in one season than most clubs get in a lifetime!

Dennis Mortimer seems increasingly to me like a mad granddad. You love him, but he keeps on saying inappropriate and silly things.

I would would say that there is a definite possibility your definition of oxymoron is correct.

It's such nonsense. I have no interest in giving particular types of managers "a chance". I am very interested in getting the right manager in to manage the club, and couldn't give a flying one where they come from if they're successful.

Roberto Martinez now in to as short as 3/1 with the bookies.

I like him.  I think he's done a decent job at Wigan, his teams try to play attractive football and he is young and full of potential.

Probably more of a 2 - 3 years done the line for a club like us though.

Getting Wigan to finish 15th-17th every year is no great achievement, Dave Whelan spends plenty of cash compared to a lot of Chairmen at that end of the league. He could be good, but would be a massive gamble based on minimal evidence.

If he gets Wigan top eight, fair enough. Top 17? No big achievement.

Absolutely, Ger. There seems to be plenty of good managers looking for a job this season, not all who'll find a job come the start of the season, never mind the chancers.

I think keeping a club like Wigan in the premiership, whilst not abandoning his football philosophy is a decent effort for a young manager.

He also has to deal with losing their best players each year and having to gel new players into his team and system.

Also don't forget the job he did at Swansea.  A lot of their players and the style of play that has been successful for them was brought in by Martinez.

As I said, its mostly his potential thats of interest.  I think he'll be a fine manager.

Agreed cd. But I think he has great potential that is probably stifled at Wigan. With a more ambitious club whose owner may be looking for a long term plan/investment and prepared to provide more than Whelan and 14,000 coming along to watch, he could be worth a go and the club could build really well around the guy. Lots of us have mentioned how it would be great to have a big name but who might bugger off as soon as a "better" offer comes their way.
Having said that I'd want to shoot him if we didn't show clear improvements after a few months!
I want it all!

Agree to an extent. It's a decent achievement but not a spectacular one. He might be a fine manager eventually, but I'd say let him prove it before getting a job as big as Villa.

Agree with that, I think 2 - 3 years and he'll be ready for a job at a club around our size.

Yep, 2-3 years of improving Wigan - as opposed to just managing to beat the drop every season - would make him a more plausible candidate.

McLaren makes Hughes look like Guardiola by comparison.

I can't believe we'd appoint him.

If the board have been concerned with the downturn in gates in recent years, an appointment like McClaren would seem like an odd choice.

It would virtually guarantee vast open expanses on the Holte and in the Trinity next year.
