I'm sure I heard on the news this morning that the Club had come out and said mark Hughes would not be becoming Villa manager.

Or did I dream it???
That's been pretty much doing the rounds. As Tim says, Pat Murphy stated it pretty clearly and was ruling in McLaren big time! Please GOD NOOOOO! Also stated Villa had a short list of ONE but no-one at the club was saying a thing! I wonder.....

Please no.

To be fair Pat Murphy, who I think is a thoroughly professional and experienced man, was clearly indicating McClaren a couple of days ago, before we all became convinced it would be Hughes or maybe Ancelotti. Apparently he is highly regarded in the boardroom. Murphy has no reason to make this up.

Agreed. Murphy, if anyone among the journos, will have a really well-informed idea of what's happening. I'm pleased if Hughes is out of it, gutted that McLaren is maybe being considered , but fascinated by the whole thing. It suggests to me that Randy is gonna come up with a massive name or a total surprise...or both!

McLaren makes Hughes look like Guardiola by comparison.

I can't believe we'd appoint him.

Where does it say/quoted that Ancellotti and Moyes are not interested?

All I know is that no-one has a clue.  I'd managed to convince myself it was Ancelotti before I'd left work yesterday, only to be sure it was Hughes by the time I logged on and saw he'd resigned.  Now this morning I don't have a clue.  All I know is that I'll be diving on here every ten minutes or so today and not get any fucking work done again.

I would really rather it wasn't McLaren - I actually think he id decent - but he will come in against a backdrop of negativity and won't give the club the feel-good factor it has needed since the Carling cup final.  It won't convince Young, Downing and Bent that we are on the up anywhere and will not create a boost in Season ticket sales.

After taking on Houllier, I can believe anything.

Oliver Kay in the National media putting us down now (Times)

He says that it would be hard to undestand why Hughes would swap Fulham for Villa and that our ambition wouldn't match his.

When did we turn into Bolton?

Moyes has said it before - post MON running off - and he said it again in the Guardian a few weeks ago. Likes the club, his chairman and the fans. BUT, he probably needed to say that considering his close relationship with Kenwright. You wouldn't want to tell the world you're letting your mate down would you? Dunno about Ancellotti?

A big name from left field still could come into it - someone like Van Gaal maybe - Faulkner said in an interview with some unofficial magazine somewhere that may be the programme or not that the Ajax model is something they want to replicate.

For me Van Gaal ticks all the boxes.

If we're looking for a big name, he's most certainly it.
If we're looking for somebody that's won things, he most certainly has.
If we're looking for somebody that understands the Ajax model..
If we're looking for somebody that plays attractive football, his teams most certainly do.
If we're looking for somebody that has a vast knowledge and network across Europe, I'm sure he does.

Importantly, if we're looking for a long term manager that can build something and not piss off after the first sign of success, he's our man. Think about it, he's not going back to Spain where he managed Barca, he's had a rough time in Germany and won't be looking to go back there in a rush, he's not suited to Italy and France you can forget. He wants to try his hand in the Premier League, it wasn't so long ago he was linked with the Man Utd job. He's the type of manager I could see Spurs going for if Redknapp were to leave White Hart Lane.

I really think he's a perfect match both for Villa and what Randy is really looking to achieve long term. The fact that he's never managed in England before is a red herring. Neither had Wenger, Houllier, Benitez, Mourinho and every other Chelsea manager since Hoddle. The fact that after a rough time with Bayern, he'll be looking to prove himself again. I'm sure stability at a well run club is high up on his agenda. We'd be foolish not to consider him.

when we appointed someone last time top of the list was experience in the Prem.  I would be surprised if that has gone out of the window.

Pat Murphy doesn't know, he has no contacts at the club anymore, well, since HDE left.

He's just guessing, like the rest of us.

Aren't we something like the 5th highest spenders in the whole of Europe since Randy took over?  But I guess something like that is too near the dreaded word 'research' for one for him to consider it.

Any reasonable football fan would realise that is a lot of crap. All Oliver Kay is successfully doing is losing credibility
