maybe, but can you imagine benitez going to liverpool is we're not doing well. He won't be able to resist responding to them. If we lose it will be "f**k off back to liverpool" Once you've got that dislike colouring people's opinions you're on borrowed time unless the results are very very good.

And if he responds in the way GH did he'll fucking deserve it.

GH seemed to think he was above all those types of PR considerations in a detached, academic sort of fashion, like an eccentric professor who has a masterful grasp of his specialism, but can't be bothered to tie his shoe laces. As I have written a few times before, I remember one press conference fairly early in his tenure when he admitted that what he was about to say would be twisted and used against him, and then went on to say it anyway.

Benitez would make no such mistake. Different personality and circumstances altogether.
That description of Houllier was superbly described. And has made me realise how much i liked Houllier. His time at Villa could of had a much more positive impression in the history books had his health been better. Feel he will be very frustrated and disappointed the game he is genuinely fanatical about and his recent involvement with Aston Villa have eluded him ....

not sure whether we would have done better if his health had been better. The assistant managers prior to and post Houllier last season seemed to do better than him!

Yeah. Might be a bit of the rose tinted glasses but the more I look at the options we have, the more I think Houllier could have been a great appointment under different circumstances.

Guardian reckons mclaren, Martinez  and jol top of the list. Eek! Surely rafa above those 3? Surely Hughes above mclaren?

If we manage to end up with mclaren after the spread of options we seemed to have I'll be massively disappointed. I'd only classify his year in holland as a genuine success.

I have big doubts as to whether any of the press have a clue what's going on, to be frank.

I certainly don't think Hughes is out of it completely.  Too early for all that.

If things drag on for a couple more weeks, then its more likely to be Hughes.

I don't think that he can "officially" speak to another club until July

My feeling too. It would appear they are after someone else, maybe Ancelotti, and will explore that first.

A big name from left field still could come into it - someone like Van Gaal maybe - Faulkner said in an interview with some unofficial magazine somewhere that may be the programme or not that the Ajax model is something they want to replicate.

For me Van Gaal ticks all the boxes.

If we're looking for a big name, he's most certainly it.
If we're looking for somebody that's won things, he most certainly has.
If we're looking for somebody that understands the Ajax model..
If we're looking for somebody that plays attractive football, his teams most certainly do.
If we're looking for somebody that has a vast knowledge and network across Europe, I'm sure he does.

Importantly, if we're looking for a long term manager that can build something and not piss off after the first sign of success, he's our man. Think about it, he's not going back to Spain where he managed Barca, he's had a rough time in Germany and won't be looking to go back there in a rush, he's not suited to Italy and France you can forget. He wants to try his hand in the Premier League, it wasn't so long ago he was linked with the Man Utd job. He's the type of manager I could see Spurs going for if Redknapp were to leave White Hart Lane.

I really think he's a perfect match both for Villa and what Randy is really looking to achieve long term. The fact that he's never managed in England before is a red herring. Neither had Wenger, Houllier, Benitez, Mourinho and every other Chelsea manager since Hoddle. The fact that after a rough time with Bayern, he'll be looking to prove himself again. I'm sure stability at a well run club is high up on his agenda. We'd be foolish not to consider him.

Yeah, I'd be disappointed with any of that lot, but especially Mclaren.   If that really is our shortlist it's a sorry state of affairs.  No idea why people want Jol.  Spent a shit load at Spurs and they got rid for a reason.  I like Martinez but he'd be a very, very long shot.

You've got to bear in mind different media outlets are saying different things.

If it was right what one source was saying the other sources would be saying the same thing.

I'm scared.

We'll be a laughing stock if we appoint McClaren.

Mark Kelly - a good summation of why Van Gaal would be attractive and well-suited to where Villa are right now and want to go. The dutch have a great history of both playing and managing well in the Premier league too. I just wonder if Lerner and the rest of the board are bold enough to go for such a proposition who does not have the English league experience they seem to feel is so important. It would be gaalling (sorry) to think that they would overlook such a manager and other options like Rijkaard, Van Basten etc just becuase they had not played or managed in the league before.
