And in reponse to th new pillock on the block luke 95, what the fuck have Man City done in their entire history that we should be ashamed of? We're one of a select band to win Europe's greatest prize. They've just this minute shown up in the game.

2 league championships & 3 FACups to our 1 league & 1 FACup in the last 80 yrs

Yet around the same time (maybe 3 yrs before), a team that was always considered a Division 2 side started to have some vision, started to appoint some big names, Hullit, Vialli, (and remember this was before Russians so you cant say it was money)
Yes you can.

To say otherwise just shows a complete ignorance of even relatively recent history.

Never heard of Matthew Harding?

I can see merit in some of the gripes about Hughes based on his track record (lack of honours as a manager, some of the scufflers he had on the books at Blackburn -even if he did inherit a fair few of them).

I don't even have a huge issue with the more irrational dislikes; his Man U connections, his resemblance to Ailsa Stewart and all the rest of it.

But some of the other justifications don't stack up.

Not a big enough name to attract players? He's played for Man U, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Chelsea.  And at the last club where he had the finance available to actually sign big names, he didn't seem to have any issues in that regard.

His teams don't play good football? Blackburn had more that their share of thugs, 'tis true. But aside from Savage and Bellamy, he inherited the rest. Truth be told, we could probably do with a few 'orrible barstewards. With better resources though, Man Citeh played a far more expansive game (yet could still dish out the physical stuff when required). His Fulham side have looked more entertaining this year compared to Woy's defensive killjoys. They've even improved on the road.
That shows me he is capable of (a) working with what he has and (b) overseeing a form of progression.

And on a side note, haven't Fulham just qualified for Europe via the Fairplay league? So maybe he's modified his approach in that regard too.

Spot on!! Why some people are trying to justify that he hasn't done well at previous clubs or play good football is just beyond me.

Why are completely ignoring our League Cup and European successes. Are they not important or relevant?

Yeah, who was rich but not mega rich

In the same way Randy Lerner is rich but noit mega rich.

In fact, Lerner in 2011 and Harding in 1996 are very very similar comparisons.

So thanks for proving the point

Lerner has the perfect chance to work out which kind of club owner he wants to be remembered as

An Ellis - who kept the club safe, we would never go bankrupt, but then again, we would only ever be the bridesmaid

Or Harding - a guy who went down in history of changing the entire history of a football club

Blimey, if that think that proves the point it must be on some pretty flimsy foundations.

I get the appeal of Ancellotti and any other in vogue name listed, I genuinely do. And if we have any chance of getting a manager of that calibre we should go for it. But who's to say we haven't put the feelers out and he's made it clear he wants a club in the capital?

Going by past honours only (or even primarily) is a painting by numbers approach. It ignores the snapshot in time when said manager achieved that success, the advantages he had over the rest of the competition and so on.

There is also a better than average chance that if they've built themselves up to a level where they're in circulation whenever the very biggest jobs come up, going to a club like us is at best risky and at worst a career finisher. The exception to that being an experienced, much older manager who perhaps doesn't want the pressure associated the top jobs anymore. But we've seen the problems that can cause with GH.

Part of the skill in building a squad is acquiring players on the way up rather than on the way down. Should we have signed someone like Damien Duff, for instance in 2007 rather than Ashley Young? Based purely on honours and success in the game at that time, it would have been the former. Time has shown that would have been an incredibly short-sighted approach.

Do we totally discount that kind of reasoning when we search for a manager?

How many major topflight honours had Brian Little won as manager when we appointed him in 1994?

At the time, which clubs had more money than Chelsea when Harding was there?

Hughes' reputation for putting out a team of bruisers is undeserved and seems to be based on his first few months at Blackburn. He set them up that way to avoid relegation then changed the style to something much more pleasing on the eye. He just can't seem to shake off that reputation with some fans though despite it being years ago.

His record for picking up bargains in the transfer market is not too shabby either.

Like the scarf says guys: Proud History Bright Future.
We all love the Villa and the stuff we've won, however long ago, is part of what our great club has achieved.
The Future? We all know we have the potential to do great things and we're all gagging for our club to be doing it. Let's get the best bloke in possible, support him and the team and enjoy chasing the CL teams!

His record for wasting astonishing amounts of money when he is given an open cheque-book is pretty eye-opening as well though.
