When GT took over us, we knew if he was successful he would be off. He was groomed for the England job the day he started to be successful with Watford.

GT was only with us 3 years - not exactly a "long term" appointment

In that time he did more for our club than anybody else I can remember in my time as being a Villa fan.

In those three years, we reaped the benefits for the next 15.

If you employ quality, you don't have to think long term, coz that will look after itself !

Man City and Arsenal for the oppositite reasons have proven you cannot build a club for the long term nowadays - those days are totally gone.

And to be honest, I am not interested in the long term anyway. I now this sounds morbid, but none of us know how long we have left on this earth. I am 40, now I hope I have at least 50 years left in me at least, but as we all know, you can't take that for granted, if people like John Hartson , Russell Watson and others can get life threatening illnesses, so can any of us.

So, quite honestly, I want Villa to win things whilst I am alive, I don't really care if we build a club that can compete with the best in Europe in 15 years time if I will be dead !

I'll take short term success now thanks !

I can't recall anyone saying here "I wish we hadn't have won the league in 81 , and Euro cup in 82 - we didn't sustain it long term !"

There is no-one on this planet that could be appointed and would guarantee us instant success, other than a very flukey cup win, so we may as well build for the long term.  It's our only chance.

If we have a chance of appointing a champions league winning manager who did the double in this country twelve months ago we have to go for it. First people said he couldn't be a success unless at one of the really top clubs,  the likes of Milan and Chelsea. I pointed out he'd come second with Parma. The answers were - he had good players and a big budget?! Now the argument against seems to be he would bugger off to manage Italy or Barcelona like a  shot and not be in it for the long term. So Benitez wouldn't bugger off for Real madrid or Spain? Moyes or Hughes to Man Utd? Let's just try and get the best we can and when he goes (which they all do one way or another) then we deal with it.

Totally agree with this, and to be honest, even though I am debating, I dont think he'd come.

My beef is with the arguament "as soon as he is successful ,he will go elsewhere"

Thats like saying even though the best looking, most sexiest woman, with the most fantastic personality and someone you get on brilliantly with,  in town is dying to go out with you, you would turn her down just in case she left you for a better looking bloke in two years.

Its just plain daft !

Ok, a question for those who say they would be happy with Mark Hughes. Would they be happy for him to come if he was under contract and Randy had to shell out £2m-£3m to pay up his Fulham Contract?

To be honest, if randy Lerner can afford to pay Mustifa Salifou for 4 yrs (even if he was only on 2k a week that is half a millions quid !!) , I dont really care how much it costs to get us a manager

People say "Ancelloti will cost 6m a year"

Well great, one of the best managers in the world for two years will cost the same as heskey, harewood and petrov

I know which person I'd rather have at the club

Yeah same here, Hughes is a right hard bastard...it would be easy to knock that carrot out of Gollum's gob, bloody weed.  :)

I wouldnt go that far

I'd rather take hughes to Holloway though !

I forgot to mention earlier, talk bo....x were reporting earlier Moyes - Villa, mcLeish to Everton.

That does sound very realistic

I agree with that.  Not taking a manger (or player as some have suggested) because they will leave IF they get good is completely illogical.  However we can mitigate against these risks by having a decent succession planning in place:

1. Having a technical director
2. Not allowing a manager to bring in all of his own staff
3. A young ambitious assistant manager

I think if Moyes did leave, MON would go to Everton.
