My point is this, if we are looking to compete with the likes of Spurs and Liverpool to finish in the top 6 next season, who would they likely bring in if they were looking for a manager today?
Excellent point.  It certainly wouldn't be Hughes and I very much doubt that it would be Moyes.

When Spurs were looking to recover from a failed manager they picked an Englishman with no experience of the top end of the table.

Is there anyone out there in a similar position to Wenger when he started at Arsenal? perhaps a bit younger and hungrier?

The next Pep Guardiola?

If he's the man that Villa want and he comes, then I'll wait to see how he does first before condemning him as a rubbish appointment.

That is the least any manager, or player, coming into the club deserves.

Meaning we should do the same?  When there are two CL winners (not to mention all the other things they've won) available?

But Martinez sports that v-neck jumper, tie and suit combination which appears to be so popular among bright young managers/coaches (see Guardiola, Pep and the original master, Mourinho, Jose).

I think I'd settle for a manager who brings that kind of style to the party, all things considered.

You wouldn't know it when Houllier was appointed and since Hughes has been named the leading candidate!

Not sure either of Liverpools last two appointments or Spurs last one gives reason to believe they would do anything remarkable that Villa would not consider at this moment in time.

The key word is 'today', Gary. Liverpool is a different club today than it was 12 months ago and after the success of Redknapp at Spurs, they'd I expect be looking to bring in a big name to replace him.

My fear is not that we've lost the opportunity to break into the top 4 but we could quite easily lose touch with the top 6. Are we going to be left to fight it out with Everton, Newcastle and Sunderland over the 7th to 10th spots?

Excellent point.  And wouldn't the equivalent of Kenny be what we did with Sir Graham a few years ago?

What works for one club may not work for another, but it goes to show that the club should cast their net far and wide to find the right man and not just count trophies/medals and give it to the winner.

Mark Hughes has never achieved anything of note as a manager, and he is a grade A tool to boot!

If we appoint him, i will start to question Randy for the first time since taking over.If Moyes or Ancelotti are available and he picks Hughes over them.....oh dear.

I think there's a difference between debating the merits on here, as we did with Houllier and now with Hughes, and the reaction on match day.  I thought Gezza got a decent crack by the majority once he was in the job.

I don't want Hughes, but if he gets the job I'll be 100% behind him!

Might not be a case of picking. Moyes has said he's happy and doesn't want to move and we may be below the level Ancelotti wants to manage at.

I hope to god they place greater weight on that than on merely doing a decent job with no trophies and very little indication of having what it takes to get into the CL.  As Mark says we have an opportunity now to make a break from the fair-to-middling managers who are no better than what we have had before.  Appointing Hughes or Moyes wouldn't be a disaster but it would be, for me at least, a desperately unimaginative move.

Out of interest, who is your preferred choice?

Interesting choice of words given that Ancelotti didn't do this either and instead was apointed manager of an established CL club.

I'm on record as saying I'd go for Moyes if I was Randy and won't change that now, although in honesty I'd also want to sound Ancelotti out and see if he would be committed to the longterm building up of the club.

I can see Benetez strongly putting himself forward for the job,he wants to stay in England, heard report a week or two ago that he was discussing the Villa job.

Surely there would be a round of interviews? They wouldn't offer the job straight away?
