Bloody hell for a Yank, Randy is pretty poor at handling employee relations - perhaps he is getting bad advice (from the CEO).

We appear to have paid MON some dosh, lost millions on Coker and now potentially paying Houllier out of his contract.

I am surprised MBNA ever made a profit before he sold up :)

Only kidding General if you are reading this !

Going for Hughes while the likes of Ancelottii, Benitez and - to a lesser extent - Jol are available would be dreadfully uninspiring and an opportunity lost.

I'm sure he's a decent manager, I just think we should be looking to appoint a very good one.

This time we're looking for a manager at the best time, not the worst, let's get the best out of it.

Everything sounds a bit meh. A step backwards if we got Moyes or Hughes. We need a name that will boost the clubs profile but suppose it's the villa way unfortunately.

I have to agree, i'm not sure what the appeal is.

Viz my post above, I dis just read that Blackburn finished bottom of the fair play table in all 4 seasons he was there. Very impressive finishes - between 6th and 10th - and very good value purchases: samba, nelsen, Santa cruz, McCarthy, bentley and others all under £3m.

Spot on. Hughes is the shitty car that follows the top gear lads round with them knowing they have to drive it if theirs dies. Essentially he is a fallback option. Better managers are out of work and should be approached. Such an uninspiring appointment if it comes to pass.

I notice there were a few championing the cause of Carlos Queiroz when MON left yet I haven't seen his name mentioned? Lots of domestic and European knowledge, worked with big names and is unemployed as far as i know.

He has been mentioned.

It was also mentioned at the time that he has failed at every managerial job that he has ever had.

I think Ancelotti and Wilkins would be a great, if unlikely, management team. But I think Hughes will be perfect as far as the board are concerned: a steady hand, and the next step in managing our expectations. The Champions League is out of our reach, but top six finishes and the odd cup run - hell, who knows, maybe even a cup win - are what we'll be scrapping for.

Many still think Hughes was wrongly fired at Citeh, if Mancini hadn't turned things around City fans would still be blaming the the firing of Hughes.

At the time I didn't think he should of been fired, but their owners hired the right man in the end who won them the FA Cup and got them into the Champions League.

This being the board who have said more than once that their ambitions haven't changed since they arrived.

Oh right, he wouldn't be my chioce just that he was popular the last time around.

1st choice would be Ancelotti, but I can see the thinking behind Hughes as he has worked at smaller clubs withe relative success, can find decent players for small fee's and he would potentially save the club the best part of £15m if he could get Warnock and Ireland playing the way when he managed them before.

But who must have realised that Champions League football is further away than ever.  We needed to take advantage of the odd year when the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool had a wobble.  Now we have Man U, Chelsea, Arsenal, Man City, Spurs and Liverpool to get ahead of, all of whom look a lot stronger than us at present.

Which is why I expect better than Hughes.

That's why I don't think an O'Neill-lite manager like Hughes or Moyes will be chosen. They said that last August they wanted someone who bought into their vision. I doubt that's changed.
