Man Utd 1-1 Villa 1993 (buildup, line ups and goals)
« on: April 16, 2011, 11:11:42 AM »

This was a quality match with a fabulous goal from Stevie Staunton - i love BFR's nonchalant stance while all around him are going nuts celebrating. Such a vital match and we were still in pole position for the first Premiership title following this match but as we all know the goals dried up and the Mancs went on to win their last eleven or so games. I often  imagine how football would have progressed had we won that title.

Due to the redevelopment of Old Trafford we only had about 5/600 tickets. I gave up a family wedding in Ireland to attend the game which was on my birthday. We met George Gavin and Tom Ross by the press entrance, their access hadn't been approved so we stopped for a chat. Gavin as ever was pro-Villa and fancied us for the win. He also joined in our piss taking regarding Tom Ross trying it on with Karen brady who'd just joined Small Heath.

Apart from Stan's goal I can't really remember anything else about the game, but I do recall coming away thinking that we were still nailed on for the league.

Oh well.

Yes and we beat them in the League Cup both 1-0 but I mean't beat them in winning the championship.

Yes, it will be towards the top of our "if only" seasons.  We were terrific that year and what a thing it would've been, to have won the inaugural premier league.

I remember the Staunton goal,it was a beauty .I am sure if they had not played "Fergie's time a few weeks later against Sheffield Wednesday when they scored the winner in something like the 98th minute we would have won the title

I fully agree with that - the day our title challenge really went was that day when they scored those two goals in about the 20th and 22nd minute of injury time after we'd only drawn at home to Coventry.

Yes that draw against Coventry who came for a 0-0 draw and were over the moon when they achieved it. I remember their fans cheering as if they had won the cup.Nice to help put them down a few years later hopefully to never return

I remember that day quite clearly, I was sat in my car outside the family caravan (that we had at that time) in Burnham On Sea; I remember optimistically saying "there's five games (or whatever it was) still to go - there's no way Man Utd will win all their games !"

Big Ron dropped an on fire Dwight Yorke for a returning from injury, Dalian Atkinson. Bad move.

We were half way down Aston Lane when we heard about their winner. Gutted.

The Manure goals were so late, I think i was half way back to London when they scored the second.

Remember we were saying when we left the game against Coventry that at least we had gained another point on Manure.

I was playing football that day and when I came off the pitch I was told that we had drawn and that Manure were losing and by the time I had got back to the changing rooms and was about to shower they had scored twice....:(
