Previous matches at Upton Park
« on: April 11, 2011, 06:08:36 PM »
Seeing as our next game is at Upton Park i think now would be a good time to reminisce about some of our previous visits there. The only time i have been to Upton Park as a Villa away supporter was in 1995 when we won 4-1 and Tommy Johnson, Yorke and Savo absolutely ripped them to pieces. Trevor Brooking said it was the best team display he'd seen all season on the back of that one result. I recall Andy Townsend going off with an injury and Super Tom replaced him. The jury was still very much out on him at that time having not done too much other than score that hat-trick vs Wimbledon. Playing just behind the front two he gave us a whole new system of play and went on to have a great run in the team and a decent run of goals too. Julian Dicks scored a penalty for them but other than they they were never in it. Savo had one of his better games too scoring twice and shutting up the home crowd who'd made it clear they thought he was a waste of cash.
Other matches that pop into mind  there are the 1-0 win just before Xmas three years ago and of course the Mellberg match.

I remember the laegue cup games we played against them when we lost but it has to be replayed because they fielded an inelgible player and so we went back and won, Taylor had a great game as I recall.

I've got a mixed record at West Ham,i was at the 4-1 win, then a year or two later when we won 2-0 on a Wednesday night, saw a terrible nil nil game in the mid nineties, the only highlight being Bosnich saving a shot whilst on the floor after slipping during a dodgy back pass.

And we lost 3-1 in one of BFR's first games,i think Tony Daley put us one up.

Only been to Upton Park once, a 2-2 draw under Taylor II, Leonhardsen got one but can't for the life of me remember who got the 2nd or what order the goals were scored in.

I have no recollection of that goal at all for some reason.

Got a feeling Vassels goal was from a penalty in that game.

Two matches always come to mind - both Quarter Final defeats.

Last minute penalty in the FA Cup 1980.  The only consolation I take from that afternoon is that had we won the Cup that season, we may have been more of a marked side the following season.

The League Cup 1989 - a few months before Hillsborough - and a crowd surge that could have caused severe problems for those of us there but for the absence of fences.

My only visit there was that 3-1 defeat. I was only a youngster at the time and I can safely say its the only time  I was seriously worried about my safety at a football match. Nope, I've never been to the Sty.

There are three games at Upton Park that immediately come to mind but only one positive memory. The FA Cup quarter final in 1980 (despite not being there), the game in 1989 when we as fans were fortunate there were no fences and the game in 1995 when we won 4-1.

I've only been once, can't remember the year and can't remember the result either.

Parked the card down some dodgey side street and was amazed it was there in one piece when we got back, that's about all I remember.

West Ham was very scary back in the day. I happened to know a West Ham fan in the the mid eighties for a decade or so, he was a proper sensible chap who now  heads up a rather large accountancy firm in the City(I googled him) but he was on nodding terms with all the guys who used to inhabit the Chicken Run, as he had a cousin who was one of their boys. Our then girlfriends were good buddies so I used to go to some of their non Villa games and when in Brum he'd come to our games.
The thing was no away fans misbehaved at West Ham by that stage just on reputation alone, even if anybody looked like causing trouble there was enough wannabe ICF hanging around to see them off without the real boys having to get involved.
I used to feel a bit of a yokel back then when in the smoke;these boys dressed a season (footy season) ahead than us lot, when I first knew them they were out of their pilot jacket stage and more into barbour ! And the money they all made was just years ahead, I can recall my mate and this was 1987 and he was 21, boasting about how he was clearing £1500.00 month then as a trainee accountant.

It's different now of course everyones grown up, and last time I went (the Mellberg game) people even had Villa shirts on,well all of us in the end of course. Never would have happened back in the day.
