So we have a rail company that is expected to provide a 7 day service with contracts of employment that do not include Sunday working?

You really couldn't make it up could you?

Exactly, if they would just introduce some sort of shift working then this wouldn't happen, but then they would have to pay the drivers a shift percentage on top of their basic, which might cost them more than just paying for voluntary overtime.
You can't rely on people to volunteer to drive trains on their days off, that's madness! Is this usual practice across train companies?

It's more to do with 2 trains companies merging in to 1.The wages of the one operator was higher than the other and it still the case.

The drivers are paid 400 quid to work a sunday this is on top of wages. The company is trying to bring this down in stages hence the boycotting of overtime on sundays and certain services in the week. ASLEF wont negotiate with London Midland so stalemate. Certain t&cs of drivers in "the midlands" are better than their counterparts down south for instance 6 extra days holiday. All this bull about not working sundays! They new it was a seven day service when they first sat in their cabs stuffing their fat faces!

The train company new (sic) it was a seven day service and decided that no train driver would be contracted to work Sundays and hope for Volunteers. I know I hate doing extra hours over my contract without recompense so why shouldn't they.
