Who are the Refs that have instictively made you dread the game you were about to see?  That made your heart sink as soon as you saw their name in the programme?

For me, Ellerey and Halsey were standouts but the Ref that put the fear of McGrath into me was always George Courtney - i'm sure the hated the Villa.

On the plus side the best was Roger Milford, be some margin imo - always had a smile on his face, talked to players, used common sense and let the game flow.

Mark Halsey is definitely the worst.

Dishonourable mentions to Phil Dowd and whoever we had for the Blackpool game this season at home.

Paul Danson was abysmal. Who was the Welsh bloke who did the 1994 League Cup Final? Somebody Cooper? He was always very good.

Oh they dont make refs like they used to !

Ray Tinkler, Jack Taylor, Gordon Kew, Pat Partridge, Norman Burtenshaw, Keith Hackett, Neil Midgley, George Courtney, Roger Kirkpatrick, and of course Clive `The Book` Thomas.



Also who was the ref in the late 60s/early 70s, seemed a bit overweight and had a big Jimmy Edwards moustache ?

Rob Styles is probably the worst top level referee all things considered.  Everyone else had bad days.  Others may be unduly influenced/scared by the "big" clubs.  But Styles is the the only one who really didn't seem to know what he was doing.  In pretty much every game.
