My favourite pre-match watering hole for most of the 80's and 90's, you could finish you last pint at ten to three and still make The Holte End for kick off - happy days!

Looking a bit sad nowadays....... :(

Such a shame as it looks like a nice pub, the expressway doesn't help but it would be good if Randy could step in but can't see it happening somehow as it isn't as obvious at the Holte pub.

It was a nice building but it's in the middle of nowhere.

No trade other than matchdays. It's a non-starter.

I've told this story before but it's worth repeating....

Back in '92 we were camping out on Witton Lane to secure tickets for the Cup QF at Anfield when me and a mate were dispatched to buy some beer, so we trotted off to the Aston Tavern. Of course, as a reward we had a quick pint, and then another. By this time it was just before 11 and we supped up ready for the off, only for the landlord (smoking, 50 ish, white shirt with sleeves rolled up, you know, a proper barman) to step from behind the bar to, as we assumed, collect glasses. Instead he drew the curtains and put the bolt on the front door.

Needless to say we were not subject a particularly warm welcome by a load of freezing and thirsty mates desperate for the 24 bottles of Skol White Top that we nearly dropped as we staggered back to the queue nealry two hours later than expected.

No trade other than matchdays. It's a non-starter.

You get the impression that all the pubs round there do just enough on matchdays to keep open, but not enough to afford any sort of refurbishment. It's a pity, because there's some lovely architecture. The Brit and the Aston Hotel could be absolute classics in a dfferent area.

Aston used to be full of Irish people, now the majority of the population around the stadium is of Pakistani/Bangladeshi descent. Muslim people tend to drink a lot less than Irishmen.

I think the Barton's will be ok due to its location on a main road to the city centre and reputation for Real Ale and decent food but other pubs will continue to go under.

In thirty years time it will be impossible to get a drink anywhere that isn't a soulless Wetherspoons or a Pitcher and Fucking Piano.

In other news, the Pope declared today that he is, in fact, Catholic.

I think perhaps it is more that refurbishment would not be cost effective. The match day crowd is more or less guaranteed and Aston isn't the sort of place that people are likely to travel into for a pint at any other time.

The Tavern was the place to be on Saturday matchdays. Get in about twelve o'clock drink and sing 'til about two thirty then into the Holte End for a grand time. ;D
The Tavern and The Holte were the two pubs no away fans ever ventured into in those days.
I remember there was a pool table in the back room and if you got in really early you might get a game in before it was so rammed you couldn't move a pool cue to hit the balls.

But against the grain is somewhere like the Lord Clifden, similar sort of area to Aston, but manages to be busy whatever day you go in there and it is a brilliant pub.
