We we're very lucky to sell him when we did.  The wankers in the crowd were getting on his back because of he was a Graham Taylor purchase.

Dead right. I remember a particular game when he came on as sub when some twat in front of me on the lower Holte started booing even before he'd kicked a ball.

He might not have been a success but he was never given a chance at Villa by the fans, sometimes we're our own worst enemies.

I don't think that it was because he was bought by Taylor as such, more that people couldn't understand why he was being picked ahead of Angel.

I could.

His biggest problem at the Villa was that he didn't look like your typical football player.  That was enough for most of the simpletons who got on his back to write him off.

He's always scored goals, got brilliant feet and almost never gives the ball away.  Quality player and it's a real shame he was never really given a chance at the Villa by certain sections of the crowd or we could've made a lot more of him, both in contribution on the pitch and financial reward on selling him.

His biggest problem at Villa was that he didn't score enough goals.

Hard to do from the bench, or maybe he made more starts than  remember?   Either way, I remember liking him and having a feeling of 'we will regret this' when we sold him.

25 starts, 18 sub appearances - 6 goals.

I thought he was ok but A career strike rate of 1 in 4 in the leagues is pretty average.

Any idea how those figures break down before and after he went out on loan?

When we had Crouch the problem was we played the ball up to him early, asking him to hold it up or nod it on to a runner-al la Niall quinn or Can'tscorino for the rep of ire.

but Peter wasn't that type of player-he needed the ball only coming to him later in the move-he has 'decent feet for a big lad' but as graham taylor will say he cannot really jump-he never had to as a lad.

but time and time again I would see one of our defenders look up and try a 50 yard ball to his head, bypassing our midfield-he was too inexperienced/lightweight to play as a 'hold up man' and therefore he looked shit and so did we.

he is undeniably 6'7" so he should always have an edge on most defenders-especially when he peals to a far post and picks up a full back instead of the main centre back designated to him.
In the same way Blues do with Zigic-he is a much worse footballer than Crouch but is undeniably 6'8"

as i've said before i've never seen a player taken apart and destroyed like he did to Gattuso last week,

he systematicaly humiliated him in front of his own fans, and by the end he was a gibbering quivering wreck,
no matter what Gattuso wins in his career, and that maybe a lot he will never forget that night when Crouchy got the better of him.

when he scored the winner, it was like putting Gattuso's head on a pole and sticking it outside the city walls for all to see, the man was totally beside himself with rage, and made an absolute tit of himself.

How did The Spurs centre forward systematically take apart Milan's central midfield player? They had a couple of run ins but that was about it. I think you are letting your love for Crouch get the better of you, John.

I think Crouch is a much better player than he was when he was with us. However, I don't think he's top quality, in fact, he's quite far from being that. Flat track bully is a bit much, mind.

I'm going to sit on the fence. Not literally, mind.

he was young, playing in a very ordinary team, did not get a run of games, we sold him for less than we paid for him and a lot less than liverpool paid for him, i am sure that if he had been here under MON he would have flourished but pug nose sol him cheap

He never got a chance because anything Sir Graham did was wrong according to a very voiciferous and opinionated bunch of supporters. The fact that he was also seen some sort of rival to St Juampi, who some of those self-same supporters would have you believe they scouted, signed, paid for and sorted out his contract problems personally didn't help, either.
