No qualms about hutton , hes a decent enough player and luke was injury prone at times, the defence is sorted , lets hope for 2 midfielders in the remaining hours .

Hutton's okay. He's solid, robust, can tank forward. What's the point in trading him for Young? Well, he's about six years younger than Luke, so that's something. £3m is more than I was expecting, though.

Get the young Irish lad and a good midfielder in and that's alright, given the dampening-down of expectations around at the mo.

Just because he is younger doesn't mean he is any better. There's a reason he can't get in the Spurs team. At least you know what you got with Young. Wouldn't it be better to stick with reliability rather than the unknown, for what looks like is going to be a sticky season?

Ha! Nice. Yes, because 'younger' is all I said about Hutton, isn't it?

I wouldn't say he's unknown. He's a proven PL performer, probably a 7/10 most weeks. Very like Young. The reason he's not in the Spurs team this season (a regular last season) is probably because they have Corluka, and Kyle Walker, and Kyle Naughton out on loan and a long-term prospect. They have options at RB. We have Chris Herd, and Eric Lichaj.

As for the 'sense' in swapping Young for Hutton.... I'm not entirely sure it's all worth it, but then again, I don't agree with what's been going on for most of the summer. What I did say is that we'll be getting a player who will still have a re-sale value in 2-3 years time. Luke Young won't. I'm trying to think like AM, who's working within some strict limitations.

Strange business.  Get rid of Luke Young and replace him with somebody who isn't as good, for £3m.  There's also the fact that Luke Young was pretty handy at left back to consider as well.

I dont agree that Luke is any better but apparently he wanted out for a while.
But we do lose his versatilityat both full back positions.
We do have options for left ack though. Clark, Warnock, Lichaj and Baker can all fill in.
With Hutton, Herd, Lichaj and Cuellar options for right back.

Get rid of Young and sign Hutton and you get:-

Hutton - Dunne - Collins - Warnock

With Cuellar (CB and RB) and Clark (CB and LB) as very copetent cover.  That plus the youth in Lichaj, Baker and Lowry, and we'd be a lot better off than some people make out.

The only problem with that is Collins and Warnock are shite, Cuellar is on his way out if not now at the end of the season, and Hutton (although i'll be pleased with at £3m) we need to wait and see how he does. And although Dunne has started well, i'd like a few more games before i'm convinced. I guess 1 more quality defensive signing could make the difference though.

Hutton Samba Dunne Clarke
               Palacios

looks more solid to me, for example.

Why the hell would Man City need Hargreaves? Are they just planning on signing every player in the entire world?

Alan Hutton is a safe move. It's not meant to put bums on seats. It's meant to solidify the squad and make us defensively stronger, or at the very least as strong when Luke Young was with us. What would be useful between now and the end of the window is just one signing, even if it is on loan that really helps us, be it in attack or midfield, and excites the fans. I know that in the end Hleb didn't work out as planned for Blues, but had we signed him on deadline day knowing he playes for Barcelona and what he'd done at Arsenal, we'd all have been happy. It would be great for Mcleish to pull of that kind of deal just to get some spirit back into the fans.

I like and understand what McLeish is doing, but a little bit of spice mixed in would be nice.

That'll be the Irish lad then. It's not a star name but it's good to see we're not just looking at the established names.

There's worse things than signing a player for thousands and selling him for millions.
