Porto striker Falcao, who has been linked with a move to Chelsea, has agreed a £34.7m move to Atletico Madrid. The Colombian striker, 25, is due in the Spanish capital later on Friday for a medical.

Aston Villa have been linked with striker Giovanni Sio as Alex McLeish looks to bolster his squad.

The French-born forward, who played for FC Sion against Celtic last night, would cost around £3million.

Sio would add depth to a squad thinned by the summer departures of Ashley Young and Stewart Downing.

But Villa have been told to forget about loan approaches for Manchester City pair Adam Johnson and James Milner

sadly this seems to be the problem, kendrick even hinted last week we may have to sell a regular in aid of rasing cash to bring in someone.

McLeish has again said that no more new signings will be possible until he has offloaded players from the current squad who are not at the forefront of his plans.

McLeish is working closely with club owner Randy Lerner in cutting the wage bill at Villa Park, but that will not stop him trying to bring success to Villa.

McLeish said: "I've said, all along, since I joined the club, that we won't be bringing players in until we trade. We still have a very heavy wage bill and we've got to try and work with Randy Lerner and Aston Villa to adjust that.

"There are players at the club we respect totally but who haven't played much first-team football and we have to try and let them seek football somewhere else. But, at the same time, getting the wages off the bill would then allow us to look at other incomings."
