This is one of a few distinct differences between us and Spurs. Even though they are a selling club in the smae way we are, they manage to avoid the bad press associated with it and importantly drive the price up fo the player being sold brilliantly - Levy is light years ahead of our board when it comes to negotiations.

They will then replace the players they sold at a lower cost but not lose too much in terms of ability.

We could replicate this quite easily if we had a experienced operator at board level....

Yeah, if we had any idea the board would've sold Downing for an inflated fee of around £20m and then signed player of equal age and ability for £9.5m.

Just about to write the same exact thing

Once United targetted a winger to replace shagger Giggs - there was only one outcome - but we made a good bit of money on a player with a year left whom most of us agreed had gone stale with us

As for Downing - i liked him as a player but lets be honest £20mil and we get at worst an equal player back in return

The board deserves some stick for some things - but you cannot have ago about those 2 transfers

When you think about it, all our big name departures since Randy came in have gone for very good prices:-
An aging Barry with 1 year left for £12m
Milner for £18m plus Ireland
Ash with 1 year left for £16m
Downing for £20m

Out of the list above, i'd go for SWP, purely on the basis that we could do with another winger.

Well purely on the basis we could do with another winger why don't we go for Luke Chadwick then?

our trade out record has been impressive in monetary terms.
In competitive terms not so- losing our best players means a continous re-building process and can like in case of barry, milner downing see the palyer not hang around .

The belief that liverpool are 'going places'  and 'are back' (sorrie from where)
reamins to be seen but dowing took this option as Mr Lerner vision is not convincing the top players and maybe even some fans on how competitive the villa are.

Out of that list I'd only really be interested in signing Corluka, Onuoha and Kranjcar.

The rest are no better than what we have. I mean, come on, Ngog?
Agreed VillaZog, adding maybe Hutton.
The rest would add nothing to us IMO.

Would you rather have kept downing ??
Player of season already a stand out palyer for liverpool
Created a lot of goals and injected pace

N'zogbia is a maverick and is seen as a repalcement for 2 players

a few more like swp or bellamy on loan would be nice

We've sold 4 'top players' starting with Barry and signed three - Downing, Bent and N'Zogbia.  OK, Downing has left aswell, but up until this window we've always look to replace quality with quality.

And Bellamy isn't a maverick?

I'd have liked to have kept Downing, but once he made it clear he didn't want to be here he could fuck right off. N'Zogbia, in my opinion, is a different type of player to Downing, he is more like Young in my opinion. To get him for £9.5m was a good deal I think.

SWP is no better than Albrighton, in fact I'd prefer Gabby on the wing to SWP.

DF Alan Hutton
DF Vedran Ćorluka
DF Wayne Bridge
DF Phillipen Deggen
DF Nedum Onuoha
MF Jermaine Jenas
MF Niko Kranjčar
MF Shaun Wright-Phillips
MF Christian Poulsen
MF Joe Cole
Fw David N'gog
FW Craig Bellamy
FW Peter Crouch

All these players are perfectly capable of perfoming on the pitch IMHO
and they provide specialist postional play /cover/ dept  experience and creativity. All to varying degrees i personally would not dismiss any of these palyers.

Quite right we have replaced with some decent players very good point made but the key word here is replacing -- lets be adding to push on or just stand still as it were
To compete strengthen the squad not rebuild

Bridge is shit and on mega money.

Bridge was excellent before he went to Chelsea, as was SWP, Duff, Sidwell and I fear Daniel Sturridge will go the same way - he wasn't even on the bench against Stoke last weekend. Just shows, lack of games ruins players - take note MIlner, especially when Nasri arrives - you might not even make the bench!

DF Alan Hutton - Equal par to Luke.
DF Vedran Ćorluka - Better than Hutton
DF Wayne Bridge - Makes Warnock look like Roberto Carlos
DF Phillipen Deggen - From the little I've seen is poor
DF Nedum Onuoha - Would have him in a heart beat. Quality player.
MF Jermaine Jenas - 1 good game in 4.
MF Niko Kranjčar  - Would add some creativity to our midfield.
MF Shaun Wright-Phillips - Bobbins
MF Christian Poulsen - Bobbins
MF Joe Cole - Not sure his head/heart are in it anymore. If he can recapture his form at Chelsea would be an excellent signing. Wages too much though.
Fw David N'gog - A poor man's Balaban
FW Craig Bellamy - Not sure where he would fit in to the style AM seems to play. Bit too much of a troublemaker too.
FW Peter Crouch - No better than Gabby or Bent, would rather we concentrate on giving Fonz and Wieman a chance.

If we could get Cole I would take him. He has excellent ablity can play behind striker, left side of midfield and in the middle.

Also I think he would help bring Bannan on and far better player than Ireland.

I prefer Cole on left side instead of Heskey!
