Surely we can afford a player on loan for a year?

depends on their wages..........if its £30,000/£40,000 a year im sure it wont be but I suggest Adam Johnson is on at least £70,000 a year

We've cleared Carew, Downing, Young and Reo Coker off oru wage bill and recouped almost £40m in transfer fees. Surely there's enough savings there to afford £60-70k a week for a year?!  Could be worth a couple of million to us in prize money at the end of the season if we manage to finish top 8 rather than top 14!

After today, it's clear central midfield is probably where we need to strengthen seeing as we have so many wide players such as Emile Heskey......

Barton is ace. He's just caused a twenty man brawl.
Not completely guilty on the occasion but he is a magnet for trouble.

Gervinho sent off as a result. Barton booked.

Great entertainment (but hopefully not for villa).

You are taking 'what is coming out of the club' (which is basically nothing at all) and twisting it to fit your uber-pessimistic outlook. I haven't heard anything that would suggest we wouldn't pay for a loanee should the right player (i.e. one McLeish wants) become available and should the player want to come.

Asked how likely it would be to get a player out and another in before the window closes on August 31, McLeish replied: “We’re working on it.”

“We don’t have any money to spend at the moment until we trade. That is the way it is.

“I knew all the parameters when I took the job and that’s how it is just now.

“We are not going to be crazy about the wages situation. But I think it has been well documented.

this word 'trade' keeps cropping up.
I have never heard it used as often as it has been over the last week or so.

I presume that McLeish has picked it up fro conversations with Lerner, it is very much an Americanism.

Well thats about as blunt as you can get really. No money even when we've brought over 20m in and a yes man who apparently agreed to this when he took the job. No wonder Martinez wasn't interested, he's probably got more to spend at Wigan

Still go for Barton, I think he would be a bums on seats guy (he is a drama) and would give us options playing right or centrally.

I think Hitz would just slow the growth of Delph and Makoun, I would make a cheeky offer him 12k a week, 2 year contract, he is without a club, if he turns us down no massive lost...

well i can't imagine hitzleberger is on a fortune as he was bought in since porno dwaref took over. So if we can't afford him, Johnson is a total non-starter

He was a Bosman last year for the Hammers and Im guessing he will be wanting £40,000/£50,000 a week

His agent was quoted the other day as saying that at the end of last season he was speaking to Sunderland about a decent deal, but that fell through as they went for someone else.

He said he is sure he'll get a deal towards the end of the window, but for money that will be absolutely nothing like the figures discussed with Sunderland.

There's no way he'll get anything like 40-50k.

I really don't see who we're going to trade apart from cuellar who doesn't look like he's going now. Noone will match beye's wages. All the others are in the first team.

Re Johnson and Man Citeh. If the player is on 70k a week at Citeh but can't get a game and wants to leave then surely the player must understand that he is on such a stupid high wage because Citeh are minted and  pay it as it suited them at the time. Now Citeh are signing better more expensive players the likes of Johnson are overlooked and drop down the pecking order.
Other clubs cannot afford and rightly wont pay the same figure so if the player wants to leave to play regular first team football then he will have to take a pay cut. It's no use the player moaning as he was quick enough to sign the contract for 70k a week.
This talk of other clubs being put off by a players current weekly wage is bollox. You can't move from Citeh to someone like us/spuds/redscouse/bluescouse etc and expect the same wages.

I know they pay mental money, but I honestly think they didn't have to offer anything like £70k a week to tempt a youngster like Johnson from Smogsboro. If they were paying that to promising kids I don't think Sturridge woulkd have gone to Chelsea.

i reckon 40k a week would get him considering his options which isn't big money compared to what we were paying rubbish a few seasons back. If you scrambling around for that sort of money after bringing 23m in net and knocking the best part of 300k off the weekly wages bill since May, then god help us

The other consideration is Hitz WANTS to play for us. He would be great in that respect. I also think he's stalling on other options in the hope that we come in for him - I'm sure AM has already sounded out his agent. I predict (I was right in the end about CNZ) that he'll be a Villa player before the window closes on the 31st August.

I think we can afford to buy Johnson for say 14 millions, get  Hitz on  a free transfer and buy a good midfield general for about 8 millions (or pick one up free) and increase wages bill by say 100 grand a week then see Heskey, Cuellar and Beye leave and save about 50 grand a week next season.

Then we can buy a central defender next season. I don't buy it that we are very broke and poor.

I would be absolutely astounded if that happened.
