Isn't it bloody dispiriting that Stoke are splashing the cash and we seemingly unable or unwilling to venture into the market?

Especially when by common consent we had a poor season last year where we regressed and Stoke had a good one where they managed to move forward.

Who else have they signed?

I thought it was Woodgate & Upson both on a free and massively injury prone.

Enrique is a quality left back and £6 million is a great price. Shame we aren't in that market now.

That is my point. They have spent nothing yet. Crouch & Palacios IF they get them, which I personally doubt, are not team changers. I would not have either of them in the Villa team. (This is my opinion)

palacios  would be an ok signing , nothing super special , but id have him in our squad.

Palacios has been terrible since the tragedy of his brother. I think it is the realisation that there is more to life than football. Not sure if he can regain it. Big shame though.

Still I would rather someone like Gardner have the chance to come through than have Palacios in his way.

I actually wouldn't mind getting Crouch. I think he'd play well with Bent and generally do pretty well for us, for the right price of course.

I'd bid for him just to stop those tedious bastards trying to throw the ball at his head for an entire blood curdlingly dull match.

Honest question, Was Bent at Spurs with Crouch? If so, how did they play. I always think Bent plays better upfront on his own with 2 wingers and a support player just behind him.

Won't happen but I'd try and hijack Tuncay's move to Bolton. There's your wide and forward cover, and a contingency plan should Ireland continue to be mental.

They were but no idea how well they played. I'd guess not that great as Redknapp never really played them together (or Bent at all) that often.

My problem with bent and crouch is that they offer the midfield next to zero support meaning your midfield is required to do all the donkey work. I think that's why Redknapp used to prefer having Keane in there as he often drops back into midfield and takes up wide positions (when he was younger anyway).

SOunds sensible however I think they're trying the 'arm around the shoulder' technique with Ireland so buying a replacement now would counteract this somewhat....

I think if he's still struggling come xmas we'll see a replacement.

Agreed. I also think Bannan will be given a run if Ireland fails to find his marbles. I think there is a good chance that one of them will step up so do not mind Villa holding off before they buy a replacement.

I think this is the only way AM can operate in the circumstances...he's gotta give the current squad a good go to see if they are capable of delivering the goods. If not, then he has go Plan B and start looking elsewhere
