I'd go with that John. We could spend hmmm £30m covering each vacant position with a solid £5m player, just as we did with the likes of sidwell, harewood, shorey etc and we would maybe finish 8th rather than 12th.

Personally I'd prefer us to risk it with the youngsters. This would mean the squad would be less clogged up next summer to really push on again. I think there is enough quality in the squad to stay up.

I wonder how much Mulumbu would set us back? I think he is a top player and is just what we need in central midfield.

As an aside (and this is something I've long said and was one of my main frustrations of the MoN era) but why can't we find our own Mulumbu, Tiote, N'Zonzi or Diame rather than buy them for an inflated fee off the club who finds them? It's not just defensive midfielders this applies to but that is a position that we could use all four of the names mentioned (and probably have done so for a very long time) yet we have failed to tap into these bargains found in the lesser European leagues in that time.

In a way we have already with Makoun, he's a great deep lying midfielder with a good engine, but because his passing is so neat and crisp he's probably better off being the sitting player and the bombastic box to box role will be filled by Delph I hope.  I'm not convinced Delph's not as good as Mulumbu, Tiote etc. anyway.  The tackling of both will need to improve but especially as a 3 with Ireland or Bannan I think we'll be ok in centre mid this season. What type of central midfielder is Gardner, I've never seen him play.

i would say young gary is very Gerrardesque, think back to when Gerrard first came through he's a bit like that but possibly not as polished yet

Great, if he is on the verge of exploding onto the scene there is no point in paying £5-10 mill on another centre mid who in 6 months time will be behind Gary in the pecking order.

I thought Kyle Naughton was a right back , why have people put him down in a left back position?

Kyle started at a left back at Sheffield Utd but moved to the left to accommodate Walker. No idea which side he played at Leicester.

I'd guess he is strongest as a right back but playing LB can only have helped his game.

Was that move to extreme left or slightly left of centre?

according to kendrick the other day if cuellar goes villa will not be looking at signing any more defenders.
i know we knock him but he was right when he said there was only money available for a keeper and maybe he does have more of a clue than we think.

i think we may see a £2m signing and perhaps a loan or 2deal if we are lucky.

I think that's what GH was trying to do with Fofana before he left.

Bellamy getting on a bit now, and I really don't rate Macheda.  Only ever scored against us in the league hasn't he?
