OK, say we get N'Zogbia, how are we looking?  Presuming we play 4-5-1 as per most of last season:-

Given

Young
Dunne
Collins
Warnock

Petrov
Makoun

Albrighton
Ireland
N'Zogbia

Bent

That's not nearly as bad as some are making out.  Given AM's defensive traits I'd expect him to make us pretty solid as there is talent in that back line.  I think we'd need to monitor Petrov closely and if a game is truning against us, get fresh legs on for him in the shape of Delph.  Obviously a big question mark over Ireland, but if he does get his head straight that's quite an exciting front 4.

If we don't strengthen, we're in for a season of struggle.  Our squad showed it wasn't good enough last season, and we've lost lots of players from it.  Any attempt to spin this as a positive is utter madness.

It's not spin, it's accepting the reality of the situation. As a fan I want us to spend a trillion pounds but can understand why they want to see what they can get out of those who are already here. So, for example we buy a new central midfield player how do we then give Bannan, Delph, Makoun and Ireland all an opportunity to prove themselves?

If you think that we can make an effective midfield out of that lot, plus Petrov then you are simply kidding yourself.

thats the point though, he is kidding himself. A week ago he was predicting spending to match thr MON years

No I wasn't you bullshitter.

I was saying wait until the end of the window before pissing your pants about it.

So now we know there's one coming in, have we got your permission to uriniate? Or do you expect the"1" to be Messi?

One "for now" is the quote, not the truth ever has much bearing on your nonsense.

After spending loads of time reading this forum its time to take the plunge and register/contribute.

Must say, very disappointed by the recent message from AM.  I'll await to see what actually happens this summer with respect to transfers (in) but I'm placing all the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle together.  Some better managers interviewed for the post and declined.  Why?  RL probably set the framework for what needs to happen going forward and this just wasn't attractive enough to any decent manager apart from one that had just relegated a side twice on 3 years.  The under currents were probably well known within the club throughout the summer and that's why Freidel, Downing and Young decided to leg it (and probably Cueller as well).  Its probably why Downing decided to change his mind in the space of 3 weeks and leave.  I just can't see Zog's attraction to come to villa after this interview with AM.  If I was him I'd sit tight and and see what else comes in, and if nothing then knuckle down, play well again next season at Wigan and see out my contract.  Its a no brainer.  Expectations have now been firmly set.
I'm an optimist but this is very worrying tine for the Villa.

Oh i get it..... No doubt as far as your concerned "for now" could mean a week, month, end of the transfer window, January, next summer. Just delete as applicable eh?

Thats an awful squad on last season's form. You've got to hope the likes of Dunne, Collins, Warnock re-discover the art of defending - A BIG ASK.  You've got to hope the youth players all mature and surprise us - A BIG ASK.. You've gotta hope Ireland gets un-mad - A BIG ASK. You've got to hope we stay injury free and we don't lose someone like Bent for a month - A BIG ASK.

I applaud your optimism but we are up shit creek without a paddle.

swap Petrov for Ciaran Clark as the holder in midfield(who can and has played really well there) and that is a good balanced side in my opinion.

No way to Clark in the middle of the park. I think our back 5 will pick itself the problem will be in the middle of the park if we're looking to play 4-4-2, we would just be too lightweight.

If you're Aston Villa and you're after a Wigan player, do you need a pitch?

Apparently, he's quite keen to come anyway.

Nothing McLeish has said seems unreasonable to me.

I think there is certainly untapped talent at the Club and I also think we have some of the most promising finest young players in the Country.  We don't need to be spending 20 million on potential, we've got plenty developing nicely ourselves and for that i'm sure we are the envy of alot of Clubs.

I'm actually relieved that he's taking stock of the current squad, looking at what we've got and seeking to add one or two quality additions where we need to - makes perfect sense to me.

Which of our youngsters would realistically have a chance of playing at a top 6 club?  Albrighton maybe, if he keeps developing, and possibly Clark in a year or two.  That's it.

Didn't work when we were after a Wigan manager.

Agree Risso, I'd even have my doubts on those two to be honest.

A small ask would be that certain players drop the attitude they had last year and start acting and playing like they care for the club and fans. The squad is OK just the attitude needs kicking into shape.

aye. now we know why. "Join us , and turn us into the Midland's wigan" isn't much of a pitch.
