How old was Andy Townsend when we signed him? How important a player was he for us? How much did we end up selling him for?

I'd love us to sign Parker.

Good point, and you could say the same about Merson. I remember people saying it was too much for a 30 year old but he proved to be worth it.

Exactly!  So the people who keep going on about resale value need to look at the bigger picture!

Why are people harping on about resale value?  One minute you hate being labelled a "selling club" then you start talking about the resale value of a player?

Although this is true, I think it's a matter of buying them in and getting their best years, but then still being able to sell them on, normally for less than we paid, before they drop out of the first team picture and become a drain on resources.

For example N'Zogbia; £10m fee and £60k a week over 4 years is £22.5m.  He's doing well and re-resign him, with say a £10k a week rise in a coupe of years, taking it to 2017, when he'll be 31, and a total of around £31m.  But in summer 2016 he's 30 and his powers are fading, so we decide to move him on and get £7m back plus save the last year of his contract, so the total outlay drops to around £21m for the 5 best years of a good players career.

That's the idela scenario, IMO.

I'd take Parker, he's the sort of play we need. Not everything can be done on resale value, if he helps develop the younger players as well then that's added value in itself.

eastie - If your going to play the role of a Sky Sports News reporter then at least put your sources on the stories. I'm sick of the media, reporting on stuff that hasn't actually happened - do we need it on here as well?

todays scottish paper the daily record and sky sports reporting cuellar fee agreed. In fairness this is a transfer speculation and rumour thread as titled , and not a confirmed deals thread.

The difference is that these days the issue of the older player is wages much more than transfer fee.

I hear what your saying John, but as long as AVFC continue to make money then all this shouldn't really matter.  Who says we ever have to sell him?  he may decide to stay with us until he retires ( i doubt he will but know one knows what will happen in the future).  We have to look at it as 'return on investment'.  This signing as well as parker could help us propel up the table where we will get more money for finishing higher in the league.  Add to that a cup  and again, we have made more money.  With that more money we make, we can reivest in more talent to again push on up the league and maybe one day, finish in the top 4 and get more money for getting into the champions league.
We shouldnt focus too much on resale value at this stage as we all dont want to known as a selling club.

Why do people harp on about resale value???

Err could it be something to do with habib beye costing us 8 million and getting fuck all back?

heskey - 3 million No resale
Salifou - 2 million in wages No resale
NRC - 8 million No resale
Cuellar - 6 million loss
Sidwell - 5 million then 3 million loss
Davies - 5 million loss

So off the top of my head that is over 20 million wasted but it's fine

Why would one add Carew to the list?

Why are people harping on about resale value?  One minute you hate being labelled a "selling club" then you start talking about the resale value of a player?  Parker is what we need at villa in the middle of the park and i'd welcome him with open arms.  Sometimes in business, it takes money to make money so you have to gamble on players like parker for their ability and experience.  He will do very well for us and help us move up the table or win a cup where we can get that investment back.

Agree 100%.

I cringe when I see supposed football fans use those horrible words "re-sale value" when trying to justify signing a player or not.

What ever happened wanting to sign a player that would become such a legend that they want to finish their careers with us? I know in modern day's football it's a bit aspirational.

But talking about how much we can sell a player in a few years before we even sign him i just bizarre.

Can the mods ban/censor the words "re-sale value"?
