I kinda hope Villa have been canny enough to time things perfectly, announcing and agreeing Downing sale and then swiftly following up with signing 'The Zog'. That's the kind of news we all need badly.

We must get 2 wingers in no question, a Taarabt or Kranjcar etc. as well as the Zog.  It's a long season and there will be plenty of game time for 3 wide men.  Not sure I want to really see Ireland or Bannan out wide, but don't mind the idea of them or the third winger (say Kranjcar) playing off Bent as an alternative to Bent and Gabby for some games.

So who's going to gazump us for N'Zogbia then?

It would hardly be The Masters of the Universe, ie. Liverpool.

I'd be delighted with Nzogbia and think we only need to replace one of Young and Downing. I'd risk giving Ireland another shot in that Nr10 role. If he cannot get his head right then we have Bannan.

This means cash can be held back for a splurge in January if both fail. I think there is too much potential in those two players to not give them a decent opportunity. Basically let's not spend 10-15m on replacements if they're not needed.

-----------Parker-----Delph----------
---Albrighton---Ireland---Nzogbia-----
-----------------Bent-----------------

4231 or 433.

We need Nzogbia, but we also need about 4 or 5 players on top of that.

Let us not build our hopes up about N'Zogbia, it'll be just that much further to fall when Wright-Phillips turns up.

I think that line up looks fantastic but what happens if Albrighton or N'Zogbia get injured, someone will surely have to play out of position to fill in.  Bent's a great striker but I wouldn't want to head into the season with no back up to him whatsoever.  Larsson on a free would have been ok, butgiven Albrighton's tender yrs I think we need another wide option, but am happy for it to be a cheaper player if necessary.

Eurosport.com reckon we've got him.

Villa to win N'Zogbia race

Aston Villa appear to have won the battle to sign winger Charles N'Zogbia after Newcastle admitted they would not be re-signing their former player.

Villa have targeted N'Zogbia as a replacement for Stewart Downing, who has arrived in Liverpool to finalise his £20 million move to Merseyside.

It is reported that Villa have offered £9 million for the France international, who joined Wigan for £6 million when leaving Newcastle in February 2009.

The Magpies were hoping to convince N'Zogbia to return to Tyneside but manager Alan Pardew says he has missed out on the midfielder.

“I am told that Charles has got an imminent move, so I don't think that will be us,” Pardew said.

Would be rather sign Parker or take him on a season loan?
Sullivan has said in an interview he would sanction a loan.

Kendrick has been getting quite a bit wrong recently - he reckoned downing was no way for sale unless a crazy bid of around £25m came in - we now need to see quality players coming in as some kind of statement of ambition- let's hope for some positive news soon.

N'zogbia on the left and someone to compete with Albrighton on the right.

Please not McGeady, I thought we heard the last of him when MON walked out.

I've not read the whole thread since last log on.

Say what? Who dropped that rumour into the mix?
