I'd rather rehab a 24/25-year-old Stephen Ireland than a 30-year-old Joe Cole with a couple of serious injuries on his CV. Loved Cole in his day, but I think his day has been and gone now.

That. The chief thing Ireland has going for him, is that he still young, so he has time on his side as well as talent. I wouldn't rate our chance of rehabilitating him at better than 50:50 though so to pin our chances on him is a tad risky.

At his best he is a better player 'in the hole' than Ash is, but he will never put the effort and work in that Ash did which instantly puts more pressure on the rest of the midfield to be water carriers. Luxury players are great when work (Le Tissier kept Southampton up on his own for years), but they have to be on the top of their game creatively. Would love us to get someone like Tarabt from QPR to compete with the nutter, but they have pots of cash and are unlikely to sell.

Regarding Downing going, I am relieved tbh. If that is the only way we have cash for other players, then best to sell as we have more urgent needs in other areas. Minimum we need now is a new keeper, a midfield general that knows how to get stuck in and win the ball, and a replacement winger.

Happy to see what Delph, Bannan, Albrighton and even Gardner can do this season but sans NRC and with Petrov unable to last 90 minutes we really do look lightweight. Given and Nogbia would be good additions, but its the midfield ball winner that will make or break our chances this season. Be interesting to see if Eck can pull a rabbit out of his hat there.

For full back, central defensive cover and a second winger I wouldn't mind us taking a punt on some prospects. Like the look of Clyne for instance at Palace.

Sounds promising.  Looking at the their website it is very much like the Birmingham Mail, so I'm guessing this is the Geordie equivalent?

When I see that simple sentence and 'more to follow' it always seems more genuine to me somehow as if it was just a made up thing they could write what they like and not be waiting for the details to be released.

Thats what I thought when i saw it John.  It looks very similar to the bham mail and looks pretty legit.  Fingers crossed hey!  :D
No other website has reported it yet though which is quite concerning

Thats my concern.  Mat Kendrick says he has seen this report but its not cut and dry yet while, Dean Scoggins of the sun has tweeted me saying that there is 1 more club in for him but hasn't revealed who it is.  The plot thickens.........

Not only are Liverpool paying over the odds for no better than an above average player, through the Henderson - O'Shea - Brown deals they are effectively paying Ashley Young to play at OT.

That'll close the gap Kenny.

i just noticed this on the transfer clockwatch section of skysports.com (sorry if its already been mentioned today)

 Sky Bet:
We have seen considerable money early doors for Scott Parker to move to Aston Villa. We have cut the England midfielder from 9/2 to 2/1 to move to Villa Park, but Chelsea remain 10/11 favourites to re-sign him.

Everton were linked with Nzogbia 3 days ago according to the press up there.

I am still waiting to see solid evidence that we have even SPOKEN to Wigan

Everton couldn't afford him.

They've just been refused a bank loan for pot to piss in.

True.  Im not sure how much of fan you are of Mat Kendrick but he has tweeted earlier today that discussions were under way between Villa and Wigan.  I'm pretty sure he is telling the truth.

Unless he's been given some assurances about  first-team opportunities I'd be surprised to see Parker moving back to Chelsea. Its not as if he's  moving back to the club that gave him hid break or one that he has fond memories of. he has just broken back into the England squad and into the side. would he risk that for the possibility of  being no more than a bit part player at a club? albeit one that is a top English side.

BFR working for Sky Bet now then? Wondered where he had got to...
